Within the Discretionary Portfolio Management team, Portfolio Managers (PM) are central to delivering a great experience for clients by providing first class service, managing investment portfolios and contributing to the overall investment process. Purpose of role
Portfolio Mangers are central to delivering a great experience for clients by providing first class service, managing investment portfolios and contributing to the overall investment process. PMs act as stewards for our clients and our business – operating both with fiduciary responsibility and a desire to build lasting Discretionary relationships.
This role is to deliver Portfolio Management services to Barclays Midlands, Wales and West region, where the Portfolio Management team has responsibility for nearly £1.5bn in discretionary assets. The role will be based initially in Birmingham and will have a focus in day to day portfolio management. You will handle clients with less complex affairs in a way that closely follows our investment strategy and as you develop experience you will manage more, larger clients. The Portfolio Manager will develop strong and trusted relationships with Private Bankers support the banker in providing a “Go-To” quality of service to existing clients as well as help pitch to win new business.
Core accountabilities
Portfolio Management:
Portfolio Managers are at the core of our investment approach and its performance – delivering for individual clients, managing their overall book and participating in our investment process.
You will collaboratively manage individual client portfolios taking an active part in investment decision making forums to generate strong risk-adjusted returns that meet clients’ expectations and goals. You will use experience, knowledge and judgement to develop potential solutions to portfolio issues/opportunities before determining the best response. You will be expected to work within established tolerances and personal authorisations and to manage and prioritise your workload, to ensure all clients’ portfolios remain within the investment framework. This may be done across multiple platforms and Banker Teams.
With an understanding of current market events and drivers for all nine asset classes, you will actively participate in the investment discussions with their team and with other investment specialists within discretionary and the wider organisation. Initially it is expected that you will fully contribute to the investment process and carry out research on various investment opportunities which could include internal/external funds, equities, bonds and other products. With experience, you will be expected to develop subject matter expertise within at least one key area of investment practice (e.g. equity asset class or geographical area) and contribute to at least one investment committees, also to develop a wider understanding of the investment process.
You will apply business procedures and principles of Treating Customers Fairly and escalate breaches of policies/procedure appropriately. You will maintain an understanding of relevant risks; and keep risk events and losses to an absolute minimum.
Client Service:
You will collaborate with Relationship Managers across the entire client lifecycle to deliver an excellent Discretionary service to clients given it is a flag-ship element to our proposition.
Key tasks will include monitoring and servicing client portfolios, dealing with Private Bankers and their assistants and liaising with various areas such as Research, Portfolio Construction and Operations teams. You will be expected to help grow the assets that the team manages by preparing investment proposals and marketing our discretionary service to prospects.
Proposition Content & Management:
Ensuring our Discretionary proposition and content is market leading is a collective effort of our DPM teams and colleagues.
You will promote the range of our proposition and articulate differentiating factors for Barclays DPM service compared with other firms. As well, you will explain our investment proposition and performance along with our current strategic and tactical positioning of investment strategy (as well as the rationale) to colleagues and clients with diverse needs and styles.
Additionally, you may work on projects to evolve and enhance the proposition and/or take ownership for specific aspects of the proposition to ensure it is effectively delivered and continuously improved to make it market leading. You will be expected to continuously identify potential areas for improvement and highlight them to key stakeholders including the Regional leadership team and other DPM senior management.

Internally, you will work with Relationship Managers and other DPM colleagues across the business; as well as engage with our specialist investment managers, portfolio construction, performance and product specialist teams.
Externally, you will support and, where required, interact with the key existing and new clients.
Role requirements
Ensure that all activities and duties are carried out in full compliance with regulatory requirements, Barclays Operational Risk Framework and internal Barclays Policies and Standards.
Professional/technical experience
You will have a broad and comprehensive understanding of investment management and portfolio construction concepts and principles, ideally from experience in previous roles of managing multi-asset class portfolios for private clients.
You will have to understand the current strategic and tactical positioning of our investment strategy and how this has been implemented across our portfolios. The portfolio models will have to be monitored on an on-going basis to ensure they reflect Barclays “best thinking”. You will be expected to exhibit and maintain a comprehensive knowledge of current market events and drivers for all asset classes to enable you to actively participate in team meetings and contribute to various asset class committees.
You will be able to demonstrate how to employ multiple asset classes to construct a client portfolio optimally, within agreed parameters, restrictions and tax framework and have understanding and experience of how to carefully manage of a portfolio to generate strong investment performance over an investment cycle.
Finally, you will be capable with market information systems (e.g. Reuters, Bloomberg) and technical or business packages (e.g. Powerpoint, Excel). Knowledge of Wealthmaster and Charles River would be an advantage.
Controlled Function AND For Which Company Registered
You will operate while maintaining and enhancing the principles of Treating Customers Fairly across all investment solutions. You will contribute to the improvement of internal processes, whilst maintaining a full grasp and understanding of relevant risk issues within the business. In particular the will focus on minimising risk events and losses. You will work to global internal and external standards of client service, Know Your Client (KYC), risk and compliance and investment framework procedures. Share best practice within and across Wealth including private banking, product and infrastructure teams, and ensure timely implementation of investment decisions.
You will be required to ensure that all activities and duties are carried out in full compliance with regulatory requirements, Barclays Operational Risk Framework and internal Barclays Policies and Standards.
You will need to hold/be able to acquire FCA CF30 registration.
If not already having Statements of Professional Standing (SPS) and being RDR compliant, the successful candidate will be expected to achieve the required standard within three months of starting.
Academic and professional qualifications
You should have or be studying for CFA Level 1 or equivalent and have passed the Investment Management Certificate (IMC). Other transferrable professional qualifications will be considered on merit.
Managerial experience
None required
Language skills
You will be able to articulate investment concepts, ideas, and information succinctly and accurately. As well, you will be able to present to a varied audience clearly and assuredly to make positive impressions with clients based on style and presence.
A second language is beneficial but not essential.
Personal attributes
Working in a wider investment team, you will be a dedicated team player. This role requires a diligent, tactful, client focused individual with an ability to deliver consistently and to high quality.
