Job Summary:
The Company seeks to fill an instrumentation specialist scientist position working on the data acquisition (DAQ) and operations of the Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) and Cathode Strip Chamber (CSC) system on the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at CERN. The position will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and operating DAQ systems of the GEM and CSC subdetectors of the CMS experiment. Experience with DAQ systems, embedded software, real time computing, and C++ and a PhD in physics is strongly preferred. The successful candidate will maintain the DAQ system currently based on a microTCA backend and associated software and develop software to control and communicate with an upgraded ATCA based system which interfaces with the CMS DAQ and trigger system to readout and trigger the endcap muon system consisting of a common platform for both the CSC and GEM detectors for the HL-LHC upgrade. The candidate is also expected to successfully participate in operations of the system and working with the existing CMS endcap muon community to manage the operations of the detector including working with post-docs and students in this capacity.
Responsibilities:
Identifies research problems, designs research methodologies, performs research, and helps to prepare the results for presentation to professional organizations or for scholarly publications to help advance research.
- 5% Assists with the identification of research problems and the development of research methodologies and procedures
- 60% Collects and analyzes research data, conducts experiments and interviews, and documents results according to established policies and procedures under general supervision and limited responsibility
- 5% Conducts literature reviews, prepares reports and materials, and disseminates information to appropriate entities
- 5% Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information
- 5% Writes or assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding
- 20% Serves as a main point of contact and liaison with internal and external stakeholders providing information and representing the interests of a specialized research area

Ph.D. in experimental particle physics or related is required.
