Junior Product Designer - Automatic Labs
Position Summary:
Designers are involved in nearly everything Automatic does. From software and hardware to marketing and business development, design plays a central role here, and that's how we like it.
You'll focus on creating polished user interfaces for the iPhone and Android apps and contribute to product features from concept to completion. You'll be joining a small team of UX and design generalists, each with a range of skills and at least one deep specialty and work closely with a product manager and engineers throughout the entire product development process.
You'll have the space to generate new ideas without worrying about practicality too early, but a strong design process will help you know when it's time to move on to execution. You'll move quickly and methodically together with the team, with plenty of opportunities to pair up and collaborate.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Work with product managers and the design team to explore and design new mobile and web products and features using user-centered design methodologies like structured brainstorming, sketching, prototyping, user testing, etc.
• Create your designs using the Automatic design system and extend that system as needed.
• Participate in user testing sessions and synthesize feedback from users about your designs, then incorporate feedback into subsequent iterations.
• Collaborate with the engineers to make sure designs are implemented as intended. Hear their ideas for how designs might change given implementation constraints and opportunities.
• Pixel-perfect asset production and delivery to our client engineering teams
Supervisory Responsibilities:
None at this time
Minimum Qualifications:
• 1-3 years of experience designing web and mobile apps.
• Awareness of multi-platform design implications (responsiveness, cross-environment compatibility, typesetting etc).
Requirements and General Skills:
• Passion for mobile (iOS & Android) and web platforms, what makes them unique, and some understanding of how they work under the hood.
• Familiarity with component-based design and how it influences product decisions
• Strong interaction design skills, design taste, and attention to detail.
• Great communication skills and the ability to explain design decisions and your process to other designers.
Technical Skills:
• Deep knowledge of design and prototyping tools like Sketch, InVision and Adobe CC.
• Some understanding of modern CSS styling patterns, their strengths and limitations.
• Coding experience, e.g. Web, iOS, Android
• Strong visual design skills, especially creating or working with UI component libraries.
• Strong animation design skills. (Framer, After Effects)
• Something we've overlooked but you think would make a difference at Automatic. Let us know.
Required for Interview:
Portfolio of completed projects, presented in any digital format you're comfortable with. Should include some of the following:
• Mobile and web app design (Interaction/UI/UX/IA etc.)
• Production design (icons, logos, illustrations etc)
• Graphic design (print, digital etc.)
• Optional: Any other creative project(s) that you feel showcases your skill and fit for this digital design role.
