Incident Response / Cyber Threat Intern—SEHS, Summer 2017 Internship
INFOSEC is responsible for providing information security services so Company and subsidiaries. The Security Operations team is specifically responsible for Incident Response, Threat Analysis and the day to day operation of cyber security tools. The team is responsible for manage the security tools that keep SPE networks safe, tracking threats to that network and investigating attacks on the network. The team currently consists of the Executive Director, three Sr. Managers and four Managers who perform the incident response, cyber threat analysis and security operations functions. We are seeing an intern to join the incident response / cyber threat team to help investigate attacks on the SPE network.
Responsibilities:
Please capture projects, day to day responsibilities, and what the intern will have an opportunity to learn in this role.
Intern responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
• Review new IR tickets and perform initial analysis
• Review daily reports from security tools and respond as necessary
• Assisting phishing team with email analysis and provide responses to customers
• Conduct cyber threat intel research in support of open IR cases
• Work with IR team members to develop and produce the monthly metrics and scorecards
• Perform data analysis in support of weekly cyber threat briefs to InfoSec leadership
• Perform OSINT in support of IR and Phishing team
• Develop scripts to automate the analysis of CTI data
• Perform data analysis and research in support of “Quarterly Review” product
• Perform research on cyber threat and cyber enabled piracy groups
• Build out threat actor/malware/TTP profiles for SharePoint
The intern will gain experience/exposure to the following:
• Threat analysis and research techniques
• How to develop briefs for InfoSec leadership
• How to prioritize and perform quick risk assessments
• Customer Service
• How to read technical reports and drive decisions based on their content
• Technical skills necessary analyze malware, hard drives and adversary techniques and tools
• Exposure to all other groups within InfoSec and IT
Qualifications: Requirements for the role (technical skills, educational requirement, interest or coursework)
• Enrollment in an accredited college/university for the duration of the internship is required
• Exposure to hard drive and network data analysis (ex: Encase, FTK Imager, Autopsy)
• Exposure to malware and malware analysis techniques (PCAPs, API hooks, IDA Pro, Win Hex)
• Technical familiarity with Windows 7 (ex: registry hives, File Artifacts, etc.)
• Exposure to advanced data analysis and pivoting techniques
• Experience with programming in Python 2/3 —knowledge of Ruby and C/C++ a bonus
• Experience working with common data formats (XML, JSON)
• Database experience a plus (Mongo, SQL, Postgres, etc.)
• Understanding of SIEM architecture and fundamentals of data correlation
• Desire to learn more about the threat intelligence life cycle
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Experience writing formal reports and informational briefings
• Ability to work independently on small projects
• Strong background in general IT / Operation Systems / Network Protocols
• Strong logic skills regarding the interconnectivity of systems, software and networks
• Familiarity with log analysis
• Experience with scripting
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Program Information:
SPE’s Summer 2017 Internship is a 10 week full time program with two session starts, June 12-August 18 or June 26-September 1, 2017. All applicants must be enrolled in an accredited degree program for the entire duration of their internship and must be available for 40 hours per week for the full 10 week session.
