Responsibilities
The Company seeks a highly motivated and collaborative advising professional to serve as the next Suzanne Jagel O'Brien Executive Director of the College Center for Advising Services (CCAS). Reporting to the Dean of the College, the Executive Director’s role is pivotal to the College’s network of advising activities and includes setting the direction for the College advising program, maintaining strategic relationships with College units and academic departments, devising new advising initiatives and obtaining necessary resources, and, most importantly, leading a staff of approximately 30 advisors in the College Center for Advising Services. The Executive Director oversees a strong four-person management team to administer advising activities within the center, while liaising closely with leaders of other academic support offices to coordinate a broad network of advisors (roughly 25 total) across these units. The Executive Director also serves as an active resource for academic departments on academic policy, general curricular requirements, and student progress towards degree.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
- Financial and administrative oversight of CCAS in conjunction with the center’s senior management team, including budgets, organizational structure, training, advising loads, and staff professional development (30%)
- Strategic direction for the College advising program to support students in completing academic requirements in furtherance of career plans (25%)
- Collaboration with Dean’s Office and College Curriculum Committee in developing and implementing academic policies and procedures at all stages of a student’s academic career (15%)
- Leadership on new advising initiatives in furtherance of College retention and graduation goals, including close attention to helping students from diverse backgrounds navigate educational barriers (15%)
- Partnership with the Registrar’s Office, Dean’s Office, and Financial Aid on appropriate strategies and resources necessary for compliance with federal and state regulations, especially around satisfactory academic progress and financial aid appeals (10%)
- Member of (or participation in) various leadership committees, including College leadership groups, retention and graduation committees, advising leadership teams, and academic program steering committees (5%)

- Use research and data on student success to refine and develop advising strategies within CCAS and the larger advising network in the College; demonstrate understanding of student development theories and academic advising approaches
- Serve a culturally-diverse population and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in student success
- Manage a complex organizational environment, with proven abilities to oversee budgets, motivate and support staff, and identify organizational needs
- Evaluate and balance student academic needs with curricular requirements, academic policies, and university compliance obligations
- Create supportive environments that encourage teamwork and a sense of belonging for staff members
- Develop programs and strategies which provide personalized and impactful attention for students experiencing academic difficulties
- Work independently as self-starter; exercise initiative, flexibility and resourcefulness; effectively manage complex and sensitive situations
- Develop and write policies and communications effectively; present information clearly in formal and informal settings
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree and eight years’ experience in management and advising, or equivalent combination
