About the Position
The Jacksonville-Onslow Sports Commission is funded from occupancy taxes in the community, and increasingly by funding from events owned and operated by the Sports Commission. This progression now seeks a dynamic, driven, management and sports event savvy individual to further evolve the Sports Commission. The candidate should have on-point and demonstrated practice in nonprofit management, experience working to develop new overnight stays in the community, successful and profitable event creation and operation as well as the ability to create a vision endorsed by the Board of Directors and partner organizations for the further development of the Sports Commission.
An ideal candidate would possess a master’s degree in a related field, have four to five years’ experience in a similar operation, be a member of an organization that enforces a code of ethics and be able to both have the points above as well as to effectively articulate before a wide audience.
Recruitment Position Description: Executive Director
The Executive Director reports to the Board of Directors (Board) and is responsible for leading the day-to-day operations of the JOSC in a manner consistent with the mission and goals set forth by the Board. This includes facilitating the involvement of the Board, as well as the implementation of the actions taken by the Board, while in full compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
Position Details and Scope
Primary job functions of the Executive Director, including, but not limited to, the following:
1. Organizational administration and oversight as well as nonprofit compliance
2. Board, Advisory Group, Investors, and overall community engagement
3. Project and partnership development, management and sustainment, or abandonment of unsuccessful projects
4. Event bidding and new event creation
5. Fundraising, including sales of event sponsorships, association and membership programs as well as major gifts
6. Chief Visioning Officer: Long-range planning in concert with the Board of Directors
7. Serving as the lead public relations and media spokesperson for the JOSC
8. Overseeing staff that perform day-to-day operations as well as to support those functions.
Specific Responsibilities
• Serving as the lead staff member for the JOSC including long-range visioning and planning, as well as the day-to-day administration, management, and supervision of all staff, and the timely execution of mission critical activities. This could include irregular workdays and hours including nights, weekends, holidays, and out of town travel.
• Serving as the primary connection point and spokesperson of the JOSC to the Board, Advisory Group, community leaders, sponsors, tourism-related groups, hospitality community leaders, elected officials, military personnel, National Governing Bodies, events rights holders, area media and additional stakeholder groups. This includes developing and delivering regular presentations to JOSC stakeholder groups for the purpose of advocating for the JOSC and its mission.
• Fostering the development of new sports tourism partnerships, both locally and nationally.
• Leading all fundraising and sponsorship activities for the JOSC.
• Serving at the pleasure of, and reporting to, the Board of Directors on all matters of the JOSC including financial status and forecasts, event status, and to provide other relevant and timely reports for the JOSC
• Developing and recommending an annual budget to the Board for their approval. Once adopted by the Board; manage events and operations for the JOSC within the approved budget guidelines.
• Performing needed Human Resources functions to effectively manage the organization and the staff. Review regularly the performance of the staff, prepare recommendations related to the staff to the Board of Directors and work to ensure a productive, developing and maturing staff is maintained.
• Providing the JOSC and the Board relevant strategic visioning including a professional development plan, marketing plan, and specific performance goals as part of the annual budget presentation to the Board for their review, consideration and adoption.
• Providing oversight on all operational aspects of the JOSC including the management of created or owned events.
• Working to maintain and expand the partnership with the Jacksonville Tourism Development Authority and Onslow efforts at developing tourism and continuing to advance JOSC to participate in those where appropriate.
• Leading the creation and execution of all JOSC created or owned events.
• Working to advance media coverage and visibility for secured and JOSC created or owned events.
• Supervising and being knowledgeable of all facets of a plan to tell the story of the Sports Commission in social media and related means.
• Attending sports tourism industry tradeshows and travel as necessary to facilitate relationships in order to attract events to Onslow County for the purpose of increasing overnight stays.
• Providing JOSC Staff and Board of Directors with executive level support when appropriate.
• Performing additional tasks as required.
Recruitment Basic Qualifications
• Baccalaureate college degree from an accredited institution
• Four or more years in the sports events, non-profit, or tourism industry
• Specific experiences in an operation that owns and operates sports events, does bidding or facilitation to recruit events to the community and has experiences that drives overnight stays in area lodging facilities
• The ability to evolve an organization into the reality of a vision in place by the Board
• The ability to create a realistic and achievable long-range vision
• Is a member of a professional organization that has a code of ethics that is enforced by that organization
• Is a member of or has been qualified to be a member of the National Association of Sports Commissions
• Self-motivated, organized and able to work and lead a staff
• Strong organizational, communication, presentation and interpersonal skills
• Specific experience in sports event management
• Specific experience in sports development, sports business and industry sector
• Successful and compliant nonprofit management
• Successful and compliant Human Resources management with demonstrated knowledge of best practices in this field.
• Proficiency with professional tools such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
• Ability to work nights, weekends and days on end or holidays as necessary to accomplish a mission, and to have the ability to create personal renewal time by fostering a capable and informed staff to carry on during that personal renewal time.
• Ability to work in an event environment that may require lifting or moving heavy objects.
• Must have driver’s license valid to drive in the State of North Carolina
Preferred Qualifications
• A dynamic, driven, management and sports event savvy individual who can own the room or stand aside depending on the situation required.
• Experience and Education such as the following:
◦ Baccalaureate college degree and a master’s degree in sports management, event management or marketing from accredited institutions along with 5 years or more of experience with a similar program to where the Sports Commission desires to go, or
◦ Baccalaureate college degree that includes: a sports or tourism or event management program, marketing or closely related field and a master’s degree, both from accredited institutions.
• Self-motivated, organized and able to work and lead a staff with minimal oversight while seeking, receiving and reacting where appropriate to board of directors oversight and leadership.
• Has demonstrated the ability to create consensus for a long-range vision and can articulate that vision to others who agree to follow that vision.
• Specific experience in profitable sports event creation, management and operation
• Specific experience working to develop new overnight stays in the community
• Has worked with a Sports Commission, Destination Marketing Organization or similar entity.
• Demonstrated practice in successful and compliant nonprofit management
• Specific experience in marketing, including traditional resources as well as those prevalent now and emerging resources
• Specific experience in sports events management
• Has achieved the Certified Sports Events Executives designation from the National Association of Sports Commissions
• Is a member in good standing of the Association of Fundraising Professionals
• Is a member in good standing of the Public Relations Society of America
• Is familiar with North Carolina travel and tourism industry as well a sports related activities associated with NC Travel Tourism
