Reporting to the EVP of Film & TV, the Director of Strategy and Finance leverages his/her industry experience and knowledge of the ever-changing landscape with a balance of both analytical and creative thinking. They will have a working knowledge of the independent film landscape, a deep experience in financial planning and analysis, and a passion for finding innovative and groundbreaking new ways to grow our business. This role will also oversee all functions of the Strategy and Finance group which includes
complex financial modeling for new acquisitions, business intelligence and analysis support for the Film and TV group, and liaising with the larger Finance and Accounting groups.
As Film and TV continues to build out its financial reporting and accounting infrastructure, responsibilities will include real time performance analyses across all verticals of content, supporting the creation of multiyear budgets and revenue forecasts, creating monthly reports tracking by-title performance against fiscal year forecasts, and tracking and oversight of P&A budgets.
In addition to managing a NY-based Manager of Strategy and Finance, this role participates actively into all areas of the Film and TV business, including festival attendance, acquisitions, marketing and operations.
Responsibilities:
• Oversee & manage the weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual revenue performance of the Film & TV business across all content verticals, including theatrical release titles and the volume of catalog digital titles.
• Develop, model and build fiscal year forecasts and budgets while developing sound methodologies around longer range planning and future business trends and trajectories.
• Provide best in class financial modeling and projection capabilities to enable acquisitions to fully understand risk profiles for each film; manage and message overall slate profitability, status and financial positions throughout the fiscal year.
• Own and drive existing and new processes within the organization, focusing on P&A marketing budgets, overall film spending, contractual obligations tied to deals, acquisition spending and identifying opportunities to co-finance or invest in film projects.
• Provide industry landscape intelligence for internal teams and biz dev to anticipate new revenue opportunities and partnerships.
• Work closely with internal and external data teams to improve historical, real time and future looking business intelligence knowledge base to drive sales, biz dev, acquisitions and larger strategies to impact the ever changing landscape of independent film distribution.
• Manage Company’s “transparency” initiatives, focused on providing filmmakers and producers an industry-leading dashboard and data source that provides lifecycle data and projections focusing on the profitability of their film and the spending associated with its release.
• Key voice in determining a film’s theatrical release strategy; bringing historical data, box office analysis, competitive data and trends in order to help determine opportune dates for Company’s slate and timing.
• Ensure seamless workflow with Finance and Accounting on existing Film & TV deal structures and revenue streams via increased communication and coordination.
• Oversee compliance and accuracy of accounting with quarterly review/audit process.
• Leverage internal and parent company (Sony) resources in order to develop a more robust invoice tracking and budget accounting process for theatrical and digital releases and their corresponding P&A budgets.
• Track P&A budgets and spends in support of weekly strategic check ins with the Theatrical Marketing group as well as meeting cash management and reporting requires for the Finance and Accounting group.
• Drive independently sourced business intelligence projects to provide overall group with strategic knowledge base to improve sales, pricing, revenue trending, and content acquisitions efforts.
Qualifications:
• 4-6 years experience in financial planning at a major media company, independent film distribution company or agency
• Specific knowledge and experience as well as passion for the indie film space; its windows and players, as well as the digital/ancillary windows of distribution
• Entrepreneurial spirit, ability to think outside the box, and a hunger to work in an environment where testing, learning, failing and recovering are all pre-requisites to success
• Experience managing individuals or a team of individuals, setting goals, and helping others to achieve their career aspirations
• Highly advanced excel, analytical, and data management skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate externally with partners and internally with stakeholders across all departments
• Bachelor’s degree required, MBA preferred
