Position Description Summary
The Director of Sports Nutrition serves as a member of the Department of Athletics Sport Performance Team that is committed to excellence, advancing the mission, vision and values of the department and contributing positively to the student-athlete experience.
This position is responsible for providing strategic oversight and leadership of all aspects of the Sports Nutrition program ensuring direct contact with student-athletes and coaches. This position will coordinate all nutrition management and education to student-athletes, coaches and staff to maximize student-athlete performance, health and wellbeing. This position will manage the fueling stations to include a variety food choices and apply appropriate food handling procedures. This position will serve as liaison to the third party vendors and professional chefs in the operations of the training table.
Detailed Description
Staff Management
Hires, trains, assigns and supervises a staff of a professional Sports Dietitian and sports nutrition students. Provide strategic performance management including goal setting, on-going coaching and performance review.
Policy Development
Collaborate with Sports Performance Team in development of policy and procedures relative to nutrition education, weight management, dietary supplements, prevention of heat illness and dehydration, fueling for optimal performance, ergogenic aids, injury and illness recovery, sport-specific nutrition, and strength and conditioning training.
Education for Teams, Coaches and Performance Staff Provide counsel and recommendations to coaching and operations staffs for nutrition during home and away competition as needed for sport specific fueling needs. Develop, coordinate and implement nutrition education, cooking programs and grocery store tours for student-athletes independently and in collaboration with student-athlete development programming. Oversee nutrition education material development, social media interactions, and student-athlete dining education material development. Assess and counsel student-athletes and staff on appropriate and legal use of dietary supplements, banned drugs and restricted substances in compliance with sport governing bodies; e.g. NCAA, U.S. Anti-doping Agency (USADA), World Anti-doping Agency (WADA) and the Division of Athletics policies.
Nutrition Management
Oversee and manage Sports Nutrition budget including ordering, inventory and procurement of goods through vendors for fueling stations.
Serves as department’s liaison to the third-party vendor and professional chefs in the operations of a department-wide training table. Serve as the department lead on the development of meal and implementation of nutrition/fueling station programs.
Coordinate with Athletic Medicine Staff
Participate as a member of an interdisciplinary team on medically related nutrition concerns including medical screenings, treatment and ongoing medical management. Coordinate appropriate medical nutrition therapy for concerns such as disordered eating, anemia, diabetes, bone mineral disturbances, amenorrhea, dyslipidemia, hypertension, gastrointestinal concerns, food allergies and intolerances, and other medical conditions.
As a member of this interdisciplinary team, assist in the assessment and counseling of student athletes regarding sport-specific and gender-specific recommendations for optimal body composition and weight for good health and athletic performance.
Coordinates Individual Nutritional Counseling
Coordinate the assessment, education and counseling of student-athletes to include fueling for optimal performance, weight management, dietary supplements, prevention of heat illness and dehydration, ergogenic aids, sport injury and illness, sport-specific nutrition.
Provide outpatient nutrition therapy services including evaluation, interpretation of patient data, treatment, reevaluation and discharge planning of patients referred from other health professionals and those utilizing direct access.
Miscellaneous
Maintain professional competency and licensure required for professional practice. Maintain knowledge of and compliance with, specific NCAA, Big Ten Conference, and institution rules that relate to this position.
Assist in advancing the department's mission, vision, and strategic plan including its commitment to equity and diversity. Position will work flexible hours which may including early mornings, evenings and weekends and may include periodic travel with team.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications:
Requires BA/BS in Nutrition or related field with 7 years of experience; or 4 years of experience with a Master’s Degree in Nutrition or a related field; or only 1 year of experience with a terminal degree. Registered Dietitian (Commission on Dietetic Registration); and Licensed Dietitian (in State of Minnesota, or eligible for licensure upon hire).
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working with Division I student-athletes and athletics programs. 5-7 years of professional experience as a dietitian. Familiarity with NCAA regulations regarding supplements and health and safety of student athletes. Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD)
