Director of Recreation Services/Associate AD of Recreation Services

Under the limited direction of the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Health, Sports Performance, and Recreation Services, the Associate Athletic Director (AD) for Recreation Services has responsibility for directing the overall planning, marketing, and assessment of programs, services, facilities and fields in accordance with the articulated goals of the University and industry best practices. Working on behalf of the entire university community, Recreation Services is a campus leader in providing opportunities that meet the rising national standards and evolving trends in health & fitness. The Associate AD must be committed to serving in a leadership role that supports the University’s efforts to enhance the student experience by providing exceptional venues and programming focused on health, educational, and social activities.
This position is responsible for the day-to-day operation, policy direction, programming, maintenance, and capital planning of all recreational spaces within the Division. The Associate AD is responsible for fostering a commitment to diversity and inclusiveness throughout all levels of the organization, including but not limited to, staffing, facilities and programming that receives over 1 million uses annually. This position will also adhere to a program that encompasses an understanding of wellness as a component to holistic student success & employee satisfaction. The Associate AD serves a collaborative departmental liaison between other campus units, and lead efforts in planning, implementing and evaluating campus-wide recreation and wellness activities.
Interactions are extensive, both within and outside the department; Office of the General Counsel, Student Life, Student Health Services, Planning & Project Delivery, Risk Management, Athletics facilities management, Grounds, all members of Athletics and Recreation Services, external group representatives, alumni, fans and general public.
Independent decisions are required and have very high potential for widespread impact, both internal and public. Must facilitate cost-effective operations relating to management of safety/liability concerns, security of facilities, etc.
This position is administrative in nature and carries a very high level of responsibility within the overall management of the Intercollegiate Athletics program and the extensive Recreation Services program.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Provide overall management, administration, and marketing of campus wide recreation services facilities and programs (approx. 200,000 sq. ft. of indoor space and over 20 acres of outdoor fields, courts, and pool).
• Direct all operations, which include the recruitment, supervision, development and oversight of 17 full-time staff members (including five Assistant Athletic Director positions), part-time and student staff (150+).
• Plan, manage and evaluate the annual operating budget ($5 million) which includes budget planning, revenue generation, alumni relations, expense analysis, and establishing pricing and fees for services.
• Continually review operational and personnel policies/procedures to ensure consistency with University policies, industry best practices, and state and federal laws.
• Spearhead collaborative partnerships with other campus colleagues/departments that focus on annual overarching health and wellness themes & research opportunities that the UD campus and recreation industry can benefit from.
• Provide associate level departmental leadership in establishing a culture of comprehensive excellence that minimizes risk and enhances quality programs and safety. Responsible and accountable for establishing a culture of inclusion throughout the organization.
• Assume appropriate additional duties and responsibilities to further the mission of the division as may be assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree in Sport/Recreation Administration and Management, Business Administration, Higher Education, or other related discipline, and five years’ related experience.
• Member of NIRSA or equivalent professional organization preferred.
• Supervisory experience within a collegiate Recreation Services setting in a comparable athletics or student affairs unit.
• Strong leadership and administrative skills.
• Strong commitment to student and staff development.
• Background and experience with oversight and management of staff.
• Ability to work effectively with diverse constituents.
• Experience managing an expansive budget and developing new and diverse sources of revenue to support programs and facilities.
• Ability to think strategically in order to best address the recreational needs of current and future stakeholders.
• Familiarity with centralized university services such as human resources, purchasing, accounting, facilities services, etc.
• Strong entrepreneurial mindset associated with aligning campus personnel within the health and wellness fields to foster a commitment and culture to overall campus well-being.
• CPR/AED Certified.
