About the Position:
The Director of Athletics Marketing and Special Events will play an integral role and is responsible for the oversight, development and implementation of comprehensive marketing and promotion plans for the Western athletic department in order to market, promote, brand and enhance all facets of the athletic department while fostering innovative and collaborative efforts to engage the students, staff, alumni, supporters and prospective fans of WWU.
Reporting to the Associate Athletic Director for Community Engagement and working closely with administrators and coaches throughout the department, this position will plan and execute a large number and variety of special events from small donor gatherings to annual fundraisers, handing the details of the event from beginning to end.
The Director of Athletics Marketing and Special Events will be responsible for the overall management and daily operations of assigned areas, which includes supervision and delegation of work assignments.

Western Washington University is a comprehensive state university, highly ranked nationally, with over 15,000 students in seven colleges and the graduate school. The campus, overlooking the San Juan Islands, is located in Bellingham, a coastal community of 83,000, 90 miles north of Seattle and 60 miles south of Vancouver, B.C.
The NCAA Division II WWU Vikings participate in 15 varsity sports, six for men and nine for women. The 2016-2017 sports season has already had women’s soccer, volleyball and men’s soccer advance to the NCAA Championships, with the women’s soccer team winning the NCAA Division II National Championship. Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree
• Experience in marketing, promotions, advertising sales, sponsorships, event planning or community outreach
• Experience supervising employees or volunteers
• Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines
• Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
• Strong customer service skills with the ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff, administrators, officials, news media, fans and the public
• Demonstrated effectiveness in dealing with a variety of administrative levels and diverse groups of people
• Proficiency in Microsoft Suite and design applications such as Canva or Photoshop
• Proficiency in Social Media applications like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snap Chat
Position Responsibilities:
• Special Events & Viking Night
◦ Plan and execute a large number and variety of special events from small donor gatherings to year-end sports banquet to a 500-person auction
◦ Handle details of events from beginning to end; coordinating logistical details including room reservations, set-ups, rentals, catering, parking and transportation; creating menus and seating plans; handling cash; composing correspondence and content for invitations and collateral materials; compiling invitation lists in coordination with the Foundation and other campus/community partners
◦ Work long hours, including evenings and weekends, and travel to special events and away games
• Marketing & Promotions
◦ Accountable for marketing and fan development strategies through the coordination of advertising, promotions, and extended game-day events including management of timelines and activities affiliated with assigned sports
◦ Contact organizations and groups to schedule appearances and market to the community
◦ Coordinate with student leadership and on-campus entities to enhance student attendance and involvement
◦ Develop PA scripts and oversee in-game promotions, fulfilling all sponsorship obligations
◦ Assist with social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Snap Chat
• Management & Supervision of Internship Program
◦ Provide oversight and supervision to interns, student employees and Blue Crew (student volunteer group) regarding marketing strategies and duties
◦ Hire, train and evaluate personnel and provide feedback on a consistent basis, including annual reviews
• Design & Design Development
◦ Design and oversee the production of marketing collateral
◦ Creatively develop, design and create new applications, ideas, relationships, systems and products
• Coordinate and assist with general office duties, including phone calls, walk-ins, coordinating schedules and other duties as assigned
• Regular performance of physical activities including walking, lifting, event set-up and handling of materials
