Established in 1947, Sacramento State is the capitol’s premier University, offering a quality education to a student body of approximately 30,000. As one of the top three most popular schools in the state of California, the University has established an impressive NCAA Division I Athletics program, attracting some of the state’s best student athlete talent.
The Position Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Athletics Director provides leadership, direction, and administrative support to the Sacramento State’s intercollegiate athletics program and its 21 varsity teams, while fostering student athlete success by supporting quality educational and athletic experiences.
The Director also oversees the development, maintenance and maximum utilization of the department budget. In this pursuit, the Director is also in charge of promoting, marketing programs, and developing funding possibilities and operational resources for scholarships, innovative programs, and facilities. The Director also provides leadership, guidance, and direction to coaches, professional and administrative staff members, and student assistants, regarding competitiveness, students’ progress to degrees and overall compliance to NCAA rules and regulations.
In the review and management of Athletic programs, the Director is responsible for planning and coordinating equitable programs pursuant to Title IX, as well as for the administrative oversight of Sacramento State’s sports affiliations such as NCAA I and the Big Sky Conference.
Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of five years progressive leadership experience in intercollegiate athletics administration, ideally at the NCAA Division I level, a commitment to academic achievement of student athletes, and an ability to lead both men's and women's programs. This experience should include demonstrated success with internal and external fundraising initiatives, supervising human resources, and developing and managing operating budgets and plans while utilizing the necessary technology for effective completion of these tasks. The ideal candidate will also have had experience working with personnel in the Big Sky Conference or a comparable conference, and with engaging with faculty and academic advisors. The new Director will possess strong leadership and promotional skills, along with the ability to build effective community, alumni, and campus support within ethnically diverse Northern California. The Director must possess analytical, problem-solving and organizational skills and a thorough knowledge and understanding of the principles, practices, and procedures of program development and management. The new Director will possess advanced knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations, ideally with expertise in NCAA compliance and reporting. The ability to work creatively and independently, along with the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, and the ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships will be important in the selection of the new Director. A valid driver’s license is also required.
