MISSION/ROLE
The Director, Brand Design will report to the VP, Brand Creative and work with Brand Copy, Digital Design, Creative Operations & Production, Visual Merchandising, and Marketing teams to bring the brand look, feel, and strategic position to life. This position leads product and brand communications through graphic design and typography, photo and video direction (from concept, to on-set direction, to post-production asset oversight), and concept development for seasonal and special marketing needs. The role is responsible for directing and overseeing design presentations, layout / design for key projects, visual storytelling across product and people stories, formalizing guidelines and creative toolkits, and creating brand equity / lifestyle awareness through all channels.
CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES
Set direction and lead Brand Design team, while collaborating with creative and marketing partners to present solutions to head of Brand Creative.
Provide daily management and mentorship to all team members, along with a framework and tailored opportunities for creative and professional growth.
Set direction by producing creative briefs that give inspiration and thought-starters for answering Marketing Briefs. Work collaboratively to research creative brief contents and develop a seasonal / initiative narrative.
Lead, direct, and manage Brand Design art director(s) and designers (both staff and freelance) to complete given and self-initiated projects to a high degree of quality, efficacy, and efficiency. Be the single point of approval for all graphic design and marketing creative before sharing work for approval by head of Brand Creative & CMO.
Hands-on design of selective, critical design projects.
Establish a comprehensive brand style guide and ensure all communications adhere to the general guidelines.
Lead Brand Design team and collaborate with other Design, VM, and Marketing partners to develop strategic and creative campaign concepts and presentations.
Prepare seasonal shoot documents and work with marketing partners to compile pre-production shoot books that make effective use of shot count and cross-season needs.
Work with internal producer to meet pre-and-post production campaign shoot deadlines.
Identify, brief and collaborate with outside photographers, filmmakers, illustrators and other content makers.
Work with producer to select (and sometimes research) models, hair, make-up, props and other critical teams for shoots.
Attend and provide the lead direction of all shoots using talent.
Direct shoot post-production, including preparation of final shoot selects documents for internal approvals and key retouching needs.
Direct team to translate final photo shoot and campaign concept into seasonal asset overviews for wholesale and international partners.
Research photography and film creative. Organize and maintain a visual reference library. Extensive knowledge of both current and historical photographic references is mandatory.
Stay current on design/fashion/editorial/retail/competitor trends.
Research creative / marketing solutions in competitive and tangential markets and apply that knowledge and learning to development of new marketing projects.
Special projects as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
BFA in Communications Design, Graphic Design, or related major
Minimum of 7 years of art direction experience in editorial, fashion, apparel, or advertising/branding agency environment.
Exceptional creative thinker with a proven track record forging the identity of a world-class fashion, apparel, or lifestyle brand.
Well rounded portfolio with exceptional typographic and compositional skills, innovative creative/strategic solutions, and deep experience shooting a variety of on-model and on-talent photography. Film direction experience a plus.
Must be highly motivated and independent; an enthusiastic team player with a proven ability to provide fresh, innovative solutions.
Must have the management and communication skills necessary to function and collaborate productively in large interdisciplinary teams that include creative leads, merchandising, marketing, product design, graphic design, and visual merchandising teams.
Strong ability to multi-task, work under pressure, manage time efficiently to meet all project deadlines.
Outstanding art direction and graphic design skills.
Immaculate attention to detail.
Mastery of appropriate tools & technology; expert skills with Adobe Suite, including composing/manipulating images as needed to illustrate ideas.
Preferred experience using Google apps, Slack, Invision, and other collaborative tools
