Responsible for overall supervision of the News Department and for developing and executing strategies designed to make the station’s news product the audience leader in the market.
Responsibilities:
Directs daily news coverage by holding daily editorial meetings.
Delineates what is expected of reporters and photographers in covering news stories.
Communicates a code of conduct all news personnel are expected to follow in doing their jobs.
Keeps spending under control without hampering the news department’s ability to cover the news.
Critiques work of newsroom personnel as often as possible.
Critiques daily newscast on a daily basis.
Direct oversight of stations digital and social media strategies
Keeps other departments heads informed of news department activities
Consults with staff personnel and other department heads on possible news related programs that could enhance the station’s image and/or bring revenue.
Initiates and/or approves all news department personnel action.
Ensures adherence to station, corporate and governmental policies and rules, as well as legal matters relating to news programming and personnel.
Participates in community service activities, both as a citizen and as a spokesperson for the news department and the station.
Remains alert to latest trends in news production and coverage both locally and nationwide.
Oversees Scheduling
Maintains list of qualified candidates for newsroom position, including list of minorities.
Reviews formats for daily news programs, making suggested changes when necessary.
Qualifications:
College degree or sufficient maturity preferred.
Minimum 10 – 15 years experience as television news director or 5 years of newsroom management experience in medium to large market.
Excellent leader and motivator.
Strong organizational skills.
Strong communicational skills, both oral and written.
8-hour workday, 5 days a week; may be required to work additional hours or days.
REVENUE/BUDGETARY/STAFF RESPONSIBILITY
Must able to manage a large staff while under extreme pressure.
Must be capable of interacting positively and productively with other employees.
