Design/Pre-Media Assistant - Random House Children's Books
The Random House Children’s Books art team is seeking a highly motivated, skilled individual with a desire to learn and contribute to the children’s book team in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. The Design/Pre Media Assistant will be administrative and pre-press support to the Creative Director and her team. The position will expose the assistant to all phrases of book making, with an emphasis on production and pre-press skills such as print-ready file preparation, adjusting or retouching complex Photoshop or Illustrator files and understanding color correction processes for printing for a variety of illustrated formats including picture books, novelty books, jackets, covers and interiors.
The Design/Pre-Media Assistant supports the Creative Director on a daily basis, and offers additional departmental support as needed In the following ways:
1. Assists Creative Director and Art Directors with design related tasks using InDesign, Photoshop or Illustrator skills.
2. Maintains office systems for billing, contracts, receipt of artwork, distributing galleys, materials and books to artists.
3. Prepares Photoshop files and print-ready PDFs according to printer’s standards.
4. Color correction and adjustments to photoshop files as needed.
5. Prepares files or templates as needed.
6. Prepares and prints materials for meetings, such as comps, sample layouts, organizational charts, reports, schedules, or artist or design research.
7. Attends status meetings, cover meetings, and other meetings with Creative Director and editors for specific projects as needed.
8. Liaison on behalf of the Creative Director with other departments or individuals to set up meetings and share information.
9. Communicates in an effective, professional and courteous manner with supervisor, team and all departments.
Please apply if you meet the following minimum requirements:
• Four-year technical college degree or equivalent college graphic design program with emphasis on digital prepress and print production, printing technologies
• Strong Mac computer skills and technical knowledge, including a mastery of Adobe Suite’s current InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator programs
• Knowledge of MS Office programs
• An affinity for and interest in systems and the technical skills required for preparing materials for print production

• Exceptional professional written and oral communication skills
