Overview
The Creative Merchandiser works to identify, package, enforce, and position fashion concepts, key trends, and items to design, buy, and ultimately market. Additionally, the Creative Merchandiser must support the Creative Merchandising Team in endeavors to influence and enforce key trends, stories, attributes, proportions and key items. The Creative Merchandiser will collaborate with Trend, Design and Merchant teams; all with the common goals of supporting brand development and integrity.
Responsibilities
• Trend Identification and Research
◦ Keep abreast of customer identity and interests relating to the social and cultural.
◦ Establish these mores through close observation via media and communication.
◦ Collect images to represent and illustrate current and future styling trends.
• Merchandising and Styling
◦ Work with the Manager of Merchandising to communicate the Seasonal Styling Concept to Styling and Merchandising leads within each of the company facets in order to embed consistent brand fashion and styling direction.
◦ Continuously update and evolve said plans based on hindsight information.
◦ Assemblage looks and packets seasonally for Key Look and Concept Meetings.
◦ Work closely with Design and Merchant teams to ensure balance of proportions and ideas.
• Plan and Project Support
◦ Support plans to expedite the initiatives relating to business needs including scheduling and logistics.
◦ Manage plan with appropriate avenues of the internal and external business.
◦ Oversee monthly and seasonal Merchandising Style Outs. Coordinate, Execute and Document results.
◦ Oversee Sample Coordination and ensure all samples are collected and redistributed in a timely manner.
• Present and Communicate
◦ Communicate each season’s Key Look document to ensure proper proportions and attributes are expressed to the Design, Merchant, Marketing, and Creative Teams.
◦ Create a process for soliciting input and exchanging ideas to hone and support internal trend and merchandising development.
• Follow-Up and Strategize
◦ See plans through from conception to finalization.
◦ Continuously update said plans by preempting fluctuating trends within the marketplace.
Qualifications
• A unique creative perspective on trends in the marketplace and how they relate to the Urban Outfitters customer, with the ability to apply those trends to Women’s Merchandising.
• Requires an extremely strong knowledge of the Urban Outfitters customer and the ability to translate marketplace and trend trajectories for that customer.
• Must have a unique creative perspective applicable to future fashion trends as they relate to the Urban Outfitters customer.
• Must be self-motivated and have the ability to see creative vision through from inception to completion.
• Must be enthusiastic about product and categories and be motivating in presentation and communication style.
• Excellent verbal and written communication and ability to organize complex information and manage multiple projects.
• Ability to work independently with high sense of urgency while supporting company goals and objectives.
• Ability to identify and communicate trends appropriate to customer and distill trend information into key messages that drive sales and marketing plans.
• Ability to understand and interpret sales and marketing statistics and then translate to relevant merchandising and aesthetic cues.
• Ability to Partner and Collaborate with cross functional teams on a high level, understanding objectives of all teams, problem solving to reach creative, innovative solutions.
• Requires knowledge of computer programs including; Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel and Outlook, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator.
• Intermediate to advanced skills in the areas of digital photography and graphic design
• Styling, visual merchandising, or buying experience required.
Education and Experience
• Minimum 2 years experience as a Visual Merchandiser/Manager, Stylist, or Buyer. Focus in Women’s and Women’s Accessories Merchandising or Retailing required.
• Educational background in Fine Art, Fashion Design, Fashion Communications or Merchandising, or similar discipline.
