The Atlantic seeks a temporary, part-time editor to coordinate sports coverage for the culture section of Company website.
Over a period of two to three months, this person will manage the production of 12 to 16 stories—reported pieces, essays, game analysis, and more—on the performance, politics, business, and culture of sports. He or she will be responsible for soliciting pitches, identifying exceptional writers, assigning stories, editing, and meeting a publication schedule, in consultation with the culture editor.
The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of experience editing high-level sports and cultural journalism.
Remote candidates are encouraged to apply.
Across Company, generally, the firm looks for two “pillar gifts” in its candidates. In all of us, these are more aspirational than actual, but they are central in our intentions.
1. Force of Ideas -- At the center of Company work are the ideas within our writing. We believe that ideas – to the good and not – have consequence. Our highest work is bringing rigor, insight, intellectual honesty, to that ultimate purpose of separating the bad from the good, giving voice, argument, and flight to the latter.
2. Spirit of Generosity -- Company seeks in its ranks a spirit of generosity – a natural disposition in each colleague toward service and selfless conduct. Company writing should be cut from the same cloth – critical on the merits but informed by charity and forbearance in measuring motive and personal character.
Company is an EOE of Minorities/Females/Vets/Disability.
