Job Introduction
This role works within the Content Commissioning division in the Company. You will work with the Head of Commissioning for Drama, to deliver commissions which respond to audience need and meet the strategy for the Genre.
You will be responsible for your own creative pipeline, generating and developing creative ideas, and ensuring content is successfully delivered. You will work closely with Channel Controllers & Editors across all platforms & will commission a full range of innovative and distinctive programmes, based on a sophisticated analysis of target audience needs.
We are currently, looking to fill two roles of Commissioning Editor, in the Drama genre.
Role Responsibility
This key role within commissioning is responsible for working across and delivering independent and Studios commissions within the drama genre. As a Commissioning Editor, you will play an instrumental part in ensuring that Drama delivers to its Nations commitments.
This role is critical to delivering our strategy, working with both Company Studios and the Independent Sector to commission content based on a deep understanding of audience needs. The ability to commission across platforms as we move to an ever digital world will be critical in the way audiences experience what the Company has to offer.
The Commissioning Editor provides creative leadership to the development process, encouraging risk-taking and innovation whilst maintaining expertise to identify trends and opportunities for outstanding content. You’ll balance your editorial nous with ensuring programmes are compliant and that the financial slate you are accountable for is delivered successfully, and that commissions demonstrate value for money, quality and originality.
The Ideal Candidate
You will have an extensive range of talent contacts and relationships in the field of drama writing, directing and producing & a clear understanding of what differentiates drama on BBC1, BBC2 and BBC3 and what make Company Drama’s output distinct from its competitors.
As well as an in-depth knowledge of Company Drama output, it will be critical to have an interest in and instinct for, the overall direction of travel for Company Drama, in order to maintain its position as home to the worlds’ most original and drama output, including that delivered from the Nations, and will have the experience to deliver a clear strategic direction for the development and production of high quality drama series in the Nations.
Having a knowledge & experience in co-production and being used to working with international partners on the commissioning of high quality drama series is vital, as is having the skill to effectively collaborate with both the wider Drama Commissioning team and other Company departments.
With outstanding editorial judgement, your passion for the genre will be clearly visible along with the ability to enable creativity and innovation with those you work with. You’ll be curious and analytical, able to identify key trends but also anticipate challenges and overcome them.
As a strong communicator, you will be able to engage and inspire, particularly when presenting and speaking in public. Finally, you’ll be a leader, both creatively but also an ambassador of the Company.
