JOB DESCRIPTION
The Chief Dosimetrist will provide patient care support services as assigned by the departmental Chief of Services through the Chief of Radiation Physics Division, leads the dosimetrists in performing external beam and brachytherapy planning with the aid of computer-based treatment planning systems, performing manual calculations to determine radiation dose and monitor units, handling radioactive sources for brachytherapy procedures, overseeing CT-simulation, assisting in patient setups, assisting quality assurance checks, electron cone/cutout factor measurements, diode dose measurements. The Chief Dosimetrist is a member of the Radiation Physics Division, reports and takes directions from the Division Chief. These functions are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.
Education
- Bachelor's degree preferably in a physical science
- Registered Radiation Therapist
- Experience
◦ 5-7 years of related and progressive years of experience with high competency in external beam and brachytherapy treatment planning using eclipse or pinnacle or CMS, nucletron RTP system.

# Certified Medical Dosimetrist Certification by American Board of Medical Dosimetrist
# Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
# Skilled in math and basic physics.
# Adept at thinking qualitatively and visualizing in 3D.
# Should be detail oriented and familiar with computers.
# Candidate should be experienced with time-manage and working under high demand situations.
# The candidate must satisfactorily pass an aptitude test given by the Department of Radiation Medicine of all candidates.
# The candidate must demonstrate ability to perform routine clinical dosimetry functions with minimal instruction or supervision.
# Plans treatment technique by means of computer and/or manual computations. Performs dosage calculations and verifies the mathematical accuracy of all calculations to ensure that the calculated doses and monitor units are consistent with physician prescribed doses. Accurately enter all pertinent patient and dosimetry data into the electronic record and verify system and patient chart. Applies knowledge of anatomy, basic radiation physics and standard treatment techniques to perform services.
# For CT-based isodose planning: Oversees CT-scanning procedure to ensure proper anatomic placement and positioning, retrieves image data sets from CT, MR, PET or other emerging imaging modalities, outlines normal anatomic structures, performs 3D isodose planning, document setup instructions, obtains plan review and approval from Radiation Oncologist, performs MU calculations, documents plan into patient chart and into the record and verify system.
# Interacts with Radiation Therapist to ensure accurate implementation of planned treatment. Advises therapists on placement of diode dosimeters used for patient dose monitoring.
# Performs brachytherapy treatment planning and assists in insertion/removal of radioactive sources. Conducts and documents patient and room radiation exposure survey. Documents instructions to nurses, staff and visitors. Tracks and accounts for radioactive sources to meet regulations of NRC or State Radiation Regulatory Agency.
# Fabricates bolus, compensators, and customized shielding blocks as needed. Obtains patient body contours and planning data.
# Under the direction of the Physicist, assists in quality control measurements on treatment planning systems, linear accelerators, simulators and CT scanners. Conducts dose measurement on patients using either TLD or diode or film. Performs quality assurance checks on radiation dosage calculations.
# Attends weekly chart rounds and physics meetings.
# Prepares patient charges for services rendered and assists with departmental administrative duties as assigned by the Division Chief. Serves as the primary point person regarding Dosimetry billing
# Manages monthly personnel dosimetry reports and dosimeters. Registers new staff with Radiation Safety Office for personnel dosimetry services.
# Confers with a radiation physicist and/or a radiation oncologist for advice on new or uncommon situation and decisions.
# Designs and implements quality assurance procedures in accordance with departmental procedures.
# Serves as team leader for Dosimetry staff and provides support to physicists in dosimetry calibration, QA and new procedures
# Coordinates/participates in brachytherapy procedures
# Provides leadership and guidance to the dosimetry staff in accordance with departmental standards and procedures.
# Provides input into operational issues (staffing, equipment, etc.)
# Assists with education and training for new staff, residents, and learners etc
# Provide input on staff performance - primarily responsible for annual performance evaluations
# Participate in department research initiatives and development of research protocols, if applicable.
# Serve as a Safety monitor on a routine basis, if applicable.
