Nature Research is a flagship portfolio of journals, products and services including Nature and the Nature-branded journals, dedicated to serving the scientific community.
Associate or Senior Editors, Nature Sustainability (Environmental Science) : London or New York.
Nature Sustainability, a new multidisciplinary journal from Nature Research, will publish the most significant research across a wide spectrum of natural, social and engineering science: research intohow we organize our lives in a finite world, into the multiple impacts our actions have, and into the solutions that will ensure well-being now and in the future.
We wish to recruit three editors for the journal, to cover the physical, biological and engineering dimensions of sustainability research — we are looking for research expertise in geography, or environmental science, or environmental engineering, or related disciplines.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the team that will help shape and launch a new academic journal, to present a fully cross-disciplinary picture of sustainability research.
Applicants should have a PhD in the relevant discipline, and preferably postdoctoral experience, with a strong research record.
The successful candidates will work closely with the Chief Editor, Monica Contestabile, and with an editor from the social sciences. Together, the Nature Sustainability team will work on all aspects of the editorial process, including manuscript selection and peer review, the commissioning and editing of Reviews and News & Views articles, and also writing for the journal. Nature Sustainability will be part of a dynamic editorial and publishing environment that also includes Nature, Nature Climate Change, Nature Energy and Nature Communications.
These are demanding and intellectually stimulating positions. Broad scientific knowledge and training, excellent literary skills, the ability to absorb new areas of research, and a keen interest in the practice and communication of science are all required. Applicants should be dynamic, outgoing and have excellent interpersonal skills.
A key aspect of the job is liaising with the scientific community through laboratory visits and international conferences — willingness to travel is essential.
The positions will be based in our London office, although there is also a possibility of joining our New York office — please state your preferred location in your application.
To apply, please send a CV, and a brief cover letter explaining your interest in the post and indicating salary expectation; also send:
• a selection of 6–8 articles recently published, which you feel capture the various aspects of sustainability research (provide the full reference and a link to the article, and give a brief rationale for your choice).
• a ‘Research Highlight’ style piece (up to 200 words) on a recent paper from the scientific literature.
