Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Career Development, this position will specialize their career coaching services to students who qualify for the Washington State Passport Champions Program (former foster youth and unaccompanied homeless youth). They will also lead the implementation of new, proactive career coaching for Passport Champions and a cohort-based career learning program that includes collaboration with Company Tacoma’s (UWT) Employer Relations Manager to develop new micro internships and other work-based learning opportunities. This position will develop new educational programs, learning opportunities and educational materials for UWT students and alumni that enhance career preparedness; deliver high quality transformational learning experiences that reflect current trends, changing workforce needs and demands, and best practices in the field of career services education; and innovate in the design of programs, services and educational materials (including digital resources) that support career preparedness across a variety of career fields and disciplines. Additionally, this position will work with academic departments and employers to manage, source and develop experiential learning opportunities, internships and mentoring programs that meet the needs of the UW Tacoma students.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Career Counseling - 45%
Counsel students individually and in groups concerning majors, career decisions, internship/job search strategies, networking, resume development, interview skills, salary negotiation, and certificate, undergraduate, and graduate school planning.
Implement an intrusive advising model for Passport Champion students.
Educate students on the development stages of their careers, including: administration and interpretation of career assessments (i.e. Strong Interest Inventory, CliftonStrengths, Career Launch Readiness Assessment), major discernment, exploration of the world of work, and the search for employment or undergraduate/graduate school options. Identify and promote technology resources aimed at assisting students with personal, career and academic exploration.
Career Education Outreach - 20%
Build internal collaborative relationships and serve as a point of contact and resource for students, advisers, and faculty on major and career related issues.
Work with the Passport Champions Program Advisor to develop a positive working relationship and build rapport with Passport Champion students.
Identify campus-wide needs related to additional outreach opportunities in collaboration with faculty, staff and students to build capacity for serving Passport Champion students.
Develop educational resources and oversee online learning resources specifically geared toward Passport Champion students.
Coordinate Career Programming - 15%
Implement cohort-based programming for Passport Champion students.
Utilize strengths-based approaches to expand access to high impact career practices, and scaffolded preparation for internships.
Assess outcomes utilizing student voice, refine program approaches, track and report on student participation and outcomes.
Recruiting & Employer Relations - 10%
Collaborate with the Employer Relations Manager to expand opportunities to network with employers and expand social capital by 1) offering structured employer networking events, 2) expanding job shadowing and informational interview opportunities, 3) providing training for employer partners with diversity recruitment initiatives, and 4) expanding engagement of UW Tacoma alumni through Husky Landing (a UW-managed alumni career and mentorship connection platform).
Serve on Student Affairs and UW Tacoma committees - 5%
Other duties as assigned - 5%
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor's degree in counseling or related field and two years of experience counseling students, with demonstrated familiarity providing career advising; experience working with foster care alumni students preferred.
Additionally:
Demonstrated excellence in public speaking, written and verbal communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work with students from diverse ethnic, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
Proven ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Familiarity with the use of technologies such as social media (Facebook, Twitter) and professional media (LinkedIn, portfolio programs).
Experience managing confidential and sensitive information.
Ability to collaborate with constituents across campus and in the community.
DESIRED
Master's degree in counseling, student development, or a related area.
Knowledge of careers specific to Tacoma and the Puget Sound area.
Familiarity with all academic areas within the UW Tacoma.
Demonstrated ability to create engaging curricula for a wide range of ages and settings.
Experience and knowledge of career development theory and practice.
Experience and knowledge of evaluation and assessment methodologies.
WORKING ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
Some flexibility is required to accommodate schedules of students and campus/community partners, and to attend meetings, events, trainings, and conferences on and off campus.
