The Athletics Media Coordinator is responsible for perpetuating a responsive and positive image for the institution consistent with the departmental mission using solid public relations practices. The Athletics Media Coordinator uses print, broadcast, digital, social media and facilitates coverage by external media entities, to promote NIU Intercollegiate Athletics programs and events to the general public, prospective student-athletes, fans and alumni.
This position is responsible for producing relevant original content via written, audio/visual (audio, video and graphic) and short form (social media) to promote NIU Athletics studentathletes,programs, teams, coaches, individual games and athletics events (home and away) on athletics’ internal vehicles and to university and external media. The Athletics Media Coordinator must exhibit the highest level of professional standards for news releases, publications, and other internal and external public relations vehicles to reflect the integrity, image and mission of the institution and is responsible for exercising discretion in response to sensitive inquiries to student-athletes, coaches, staff, and the university, utilizing guidelines provided by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and the Buckley Amendment.
1. Any one or any combination totaling four (4) years (48 months) of the following types of
preparation:
a) college course work in or related to journalism, public relations, communications, or English
• Associate Degree (60 semester hours) equals two (2) years (24 months)
• 90-semester hours equals three (3) years (36 months)
• Bachelor’s Degree or higher (120 semester hours) equ als four (4) years (48 months)
b) professional publicity or news media experience which involves writing and editing work
2. One (1) year (12 months) of experience working in the sports information field.
3. Advanced computer skills and familiarity with a variety of software applications, including
StatCrew statistical packages, Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe lnDesign.
4. Demonstrated work experience in communications, public relations and/or journalism or other
closely related field within a department of intercollegiate athletics.
Education and Experience Preferred
• Master’s degree.
• NCAA Division I experience.
