Assistant/Associate Professor - Core Design - Department of Undergraduate Architecture
POSITION SUMMARY:
The School of Architecture at Company, an internationally recognized professional school offering Company website, Company website and M.S. degrees, invites applications for a full-time tenure track faculty position in the Department of Undergraduate Architecture. We seek a faculty member who can assume a leadership role in the Department’s core curriculum (specifically Integrated Design), as a motivated design studio instructor with an interest in shaping architectural curriculum and pedagogy. The ideal candidate will have the ability to support our curriculum in advanced fabrication and emerging construction technologies as well as understand that the future of our built environment and construction techniques address the rapid effects of climate change on the future of architecture and cities. The appointment is scheduled to begin in August 2018.

CONTEXT
The Undergraduate Architecture Program is a Professional Degree Program which prioritizes inventive design and critical thinking together with professional knowledge and skills. With 150 full and part-time faculty members, the Program serves a diverse domestic and international student body of approximately 650 students and awards an accredited five-year Bachelor of Architecture degree. The Department is committed to building diversity in our curriculum and among our faculty and staff and seeks applicants who can contribute to the furtherance of these goals.
Our curriculum structure over five years is as follows:
• Our foundation year is an introduction to architecture and critical thinking.
• The second year integrates the critical parameters of site and program, while offering insights into precedent and material practice.
• The third year is the challenge of the Integrated Design Studio; the project directly applies core lessons from building systems & environmental technology, professional practice and construction documentation.
• The faculty driven advanced studios in fourth year allows students to explore the core studios through a specialized lens: independent studio options in urban design, speculative propositions, design/build or an advanced examination of integrated design.
• The fifth-year student driven Degree Project extends for the full year. The Fall semester is dedicated to research and the spring is about applying that research to the development of a terminal project.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will have a range of experience in building to engage students toward experimental and forward-thinking design solutions, specifically as they apply to design, construction, fabrication and ecology relative to the contemporary practice and construction of architecture. Responsibilities include:
• Teach studios and required seminars in the core areas of the curriculum;
• Develop and coordinate courses with a focus on material practice, building fabrication technologies, emerging climate change needs toward sustainable architecture and site design.
• Lead and communicate academic goals to faculty and students
• Serve on departmental, school, and institute wide committees.
• Participate in program accreditation.
• Advise and mentor students.
• Provide outreach efforts and participating in initiatives, including working closely with the Undergraduate Chair to promote interdisciplinary applications of core lessons into the design studio.
• Participate in scholarship/research/publications/conferences, Company website the field.
• Perform all other related activities as required.
SALARY AND RANK are commensurate with qualifications and experience.
QUALIFICATIONS:
We require at minimum a Master’s degree and professional degree in architecture.
Professional licensure is preferred.
Applicants should demonstrate expertise in architectural design, building practice and experimentation as well as one or more of the following: the future of site design regarding climate change, material science practice, building and environmental systems technology, and digital fabrication (including robotics & CNC machining) at various scales applied to studio problems.
At least three years’ teaching experience at the college level and at least three years’ professional experience are also required. Favorable consideration will be given to candidates with a strong commitment to innovative design, building practice, ecology and recognized scholarship in the design field as evidenced by a distinguished record of publication, exhibition, teaching and creative achievement in architectural practice, experimentation and research. Applicants must also have a demonstrated level of inter-cultural competence and an ability to work well with diverse populations.
