Company Entertainment (SPE) is a subsidiary of Company., a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Company. SPE's global operations encompass motion picture production, acquisition and distribution; television production, acquisition and distribution; television networks; digital content creation and distribution; operation of studio facilities; and development of new entertainment products, services and technologies.
Our Intellectual Property team is looking to hire an Analyst to support the rights and title team in our Culver City-based headquarters on the historic movie lot. This Analyst will be responsible for having a thorough understanding of distribution rights and media definitions. They will analyze complicated rights language in both acquisition and distribution agreements, co-financing and co-production agreements, and multi-picture agreements and ensure deal points are captured in SPE's sale database (GPMS).
Core Responsibilities:
1) Review, analyze, and prepare summaries re Co-Production, Co-Finance, Network License and Digital Rights Agreements generated by the Business and Legal Affairs groups from the first draft to the signed agreement. Determine the relevant distribution rights and restrictions (media, term, territory, appropriate events triggers, holdbacks and windows) for assigned projects. Clarify rights with attorneys. Answer queries from sales groups about Sony’s distribution rights and restrictions and/or route such queries to the appropriate person. Enter and/or update distribution and talent information in sales database (GPMS) in a timely manner.
2) Must review talent and underlying property agreements for restrictions on Sony’s distribution rights, particularly in connection with talent rights/restrictions subjects such as dubbing, cut-and-edit rights and corporate institutional restrictions. Must prepare memos as requested in connection with such.
Requirements:
Education: BA/BS or equivalent experience required, Paralegal certificate preferred from an ABA accredited school
At least 2+ years of experience with entertainment industry legal contracts environment.
Knowledge of:
• This position requires extensive knowledge of entertainment industry contracts related to distribution rights and media grants, and an understanding of the Sony Corporate Media Tree and/or different types of digital media rights and their definitions.
Skill In:
• Strong organizational skills to manage project flow and work processes, including the use of multiple databases for required research.
• Basic computer skills. Comfortable using web-based applications.
Ability To:
• Able to prioritize work, identify potential legal issues and alert senior management when necessary. Able to research legal inquiries under supervisor direction and guidance. Able to communicate (verbally and in writing) complex issues to attorneys and senior executives. Able to analyze, interpret and summarize multifaceted contract language included in distribution, network license and pre=sale agreements drafted by various companies, networks, etc. Able to develop proficiency in proprietary database programs.
