How to Stay Healthy at the Office

Sitting behind a computer all day is bad for your health but can feel necessary to better work production. Trust us when we say, if you don’t get away from your desk, you are not being productive. Our brains are sensitive and powerful and when we try to focus too much for too long, our brains shut down. Ever feel like you’ve been working for 3 days straight but you still haven’t gotten anywhere? That’s your brain shouting, ‘Do something else!’ Your brain isn’t the only one being affected – your motionless body is trying to keep energy by storing the fats and sugars you’ve been eating throughout the day. That causes the fat to sit on your belly, arms, wherever just so you can keep pounding away at work.

There are a few simple, quick and easy ways to stay healthy in the office without compromising your work time. If anything, your productivity will increase!

Get Out Of Your Seat

By simply getting up for a little walk around the office or outside for 5 minutes every hour, your productivity and concentration increases dramatically. The walk increases your blood flow to your brain, which helps you work smarter and not necessarily harder.

Eat a Full Breakfast

This one I tend to get backlash for. Most people say they don’t have enough time in the morning to have a full breakfast before work, or they aren’t hungry in the morning. Those people snack ALL DAY, over eat at lunch, and over eat at dinner. It is a proven fact that a good filling breakfast decreases your hunger and gives you the proper energy needed all day (without 500 cups of coffee). If you truly don’t have time, make something the night before and bring it to the office. Eat it during your 5 minute walk break in the first hour of work and you’ll power through your day

Take a Break!

Taking your lunch break is important for so many reasons, which is why it is a mandatory, regulated law that is in place for your health. You may have a deadline coming up but even 30 minutes will help you be more productive. During that break don’t eat at your desk – this defeats the purpose. Be sure you go to the break room, go outside, or go out for lunch. You don’t want your brain to confuse relaxing with work. Snacking should also be done away from your desk if possible and always pay attention to your food choices. Healthy snacking that keeps you satisfied are nuts, fruits, and peanut butter.

Drink Lots of Water

Water is so important for your body, especially sitting at a desk all day. Most people confuse hunger for thirst. That same hungry feeling is usually your body craving more water. So like a plant, keep your body watered and have a huge water bottle on your desk at all times!

Sleep Well

If you had a good night’s rest, you will have a better day at work. Being healthy at work isn’t always about the food you choose, but about the habits you make. If your body is well rested, well hydrated, and well energized, you will maintain a healthy work life balance.
