The Mankato Sports Commission is a department within Visit Mankato. It serves as a clearinghouse and resource for all sporting and competitive event organizers interested in Mankato and proactively identifies, seeks out and attracts new sporting and competition opportunities that generate a positive economic impact for the Greater Mankato area. The Sports Commission takes a leadership role in growing and developing the local sports industry and works to develop a reputation as the “voice for sports tourism” in the area.
The Mankato Sports Commission has had dedicated staff for over 10 years including a director, event manager and marketing staff. Visit Mankato and its parent, Greater Mankato Growth Inc., are well respected within the region. The corporation boasts a fun, flexible and family friendly environment providing opportunities for personal and professional growth.
The Sports Commission Director focuses on raising the profile of Greater Mankato as a premier sports destination by aggressively promoting the destination’s existing resources and targeting events that will generate a positive economic impact for the community. This person leads an Advisory Committee (Commissioners), committees and task forces to drive economic development for Mankato through professional and amateur sporting/competitive events.
The Sports Commission Director must be a tenacious and goal oriented professional with a strong background in relationship development and customer service; sales and public relations and must be able to manage a small but growing staff and interns as well as be able to work through community processes to accomplish initiatives as necessary. The Sports Commission Director shall foster an environment that emphasizes a high degree of professionalism while utilizing exemplary organizational and communication skills in a multitasking environment.
Principal Accountabilities include:
• Provide management to the Sports Commission operations and strategic plan.
• Proactively identify and act on opportunities to grow or attract local, state and national sporting/competitive events that could generate economic impact.
• Ensure support is provided as appropriate to grow and/or start events.
• Ensure marketing and public relations support is provided to increase awareness of the Sports Commission’s services and impact, community sporting/competitive events and the community’s assets related to hosting events.
• Manage, coach and support Sports Commission support staff and interns.
• Miscellaneous duties as assigned by the President that advance the mission of the Sports Commission and Visit Mankato.

Qualifications:
• professional presence
• graduation from post secondary institution with degree in business, sports management/administration, event management, or related field or have at least 5 years applicable work experience
Experience:
• demonstrated proven ability in sales
• experience in fiscal planning and budget management
• 3+ years experience with successful management, supervision and leadership in Event Management or a similar field
Knowledge:
• knowledge of convention and visitor bureau industry
• knowledge of the Greater Mankato sports landscape
• knowledge of the travel industry, hospitality industry and sports in general is beneficial
• ability to identify trends and opportunities that can be utilized to increase the volume of events/volume of event participants
• knowledge of how to formulate and effectively execute innovative strategies
• knowledge of how to research, compile, analyze and report on results of strategies
• proficiency with office technology and software applications
