Position Summary:
The Director of Intercollegiate Athletics is responsible for the supervision and management of the comprehensive NAIA intercollegiate athletic program, fostering the recruitment of students whose educational, athletic, and personal aims are consistent with the University’s mission. The Director reports directly to the University Provost.
The Director of Intercollegiate Athletics has the responsibility and oversight for the day to day operations of the USW NAIA Division I intercollegiate athletic program. The position has authority over all internal and external operations of the athletic program and provides direct supervision and oversight for the areas of personnel, business operations, NAIA athletic compliance, academic support & student services, facilities & game operations, administrative support services, sports information, sports medicine, strength & conditioning and each of the institution’s NAIA intercollegiate athletic sport programs.
Essential Functions:
1. Provide effective leadership, management, administration and coordination of all activities, programs and services as they relate to the internal and external operations of the USW department of athletics.
2. Coordinate the development of all long range and annual operating plans related to the internal and external operations of the athletic department.
3. Implement and maintain a Departmental Organizational Structure.
4. Direct responsibility in regards to the hiring, supervision, and evaluation of all subordinate personnel who report directly to the position. This includes all athletic program Department Heads and Head Coaching Staff personnel.
5. Provide supervision and coordination of all daily administrative operations of the department of athletics. The position will provide supervision of all administrative personnel as well as all department heads who have assigned responsibilities. 6. Provide supervision of each Head Coach of the institution’s NAIA intercollegiate athletic sport programs.
7. Facilitate the recruiting of appropriate numbers of students to maintain prescribed squad size. Monitor the recruitment of student-athletes who represent values and behaviors consistent with the University’s mission.
8. Support the Registrar and Faculty Athletic Representative in adhering and maintaining academic eligibility requirements.
9. Support Instructional Staff in accomplishing the academic aims of the institution.
10. Supervise the Athletic Trainer in managing student-athletes’ injuries and in administering the institution’s athletic drug testing policy.
11. Coordinate closely with the Plant Operations staff the maintenance of all athletic fields and facilities to insure the well-being of student-athletes and viability of athletic competition.
12. Facilitate well organized team training, competition, and discipline that is consistent and in accordance with the aims and regulations of NAIA and the Red River Athletic Conference.
13. Represent the institution at all appropriate NAIA and Red River Athletic Conference meetings. Relays relevant policy and regulation changes to administration. Monitors institutional compliance with NAIA and RRAC policies and regulations.
14. Foster a collegial relationship between the athletic department and campus constituencies as well as with the local community and alumni.
15. Public relations.
Other Responsibilities:
1. Performs other related duties as assigned.
2. Participates in campus activities.
Position Requirements:
1. Master’s degree required; terminal degree welcomed.
2. Previous experience as a Director of Athletics and/or Assistant Athletic Director at the intercollegiate athletic level preferred. Previous organizational management experience required.
3. Must have an understanding of the position requirements and possess the related skill set and experience to effectively execute the duties and responsibilities of the position. These duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
