About
Founded in 1855, Bates is one of the nation’s leading liberal arts colleges, with a long history of commitments to principles of human dignity and diversity.
Since its inception, Bates has been a coeducational, nonsectarian, residential college with special commitments to academic rigor and to programs and opportunities by qualified learners of all backgrounds. Historically, Bates students and graduates have linked education with service, leadership, and obligations beyond themselves.
Bates has highly competitive admission, graduates over 90% of its entering students, and over half of its alumni earn graduate degrees. Bates has 1,700 students, 200 faculty members and 550 staff and administrative employees.
The College is proud of its strong involvements in the Lewiston-Auburn communities, Maine’s second largest urban area, with a population of approximately 65,000. Bates is located on a beautiful, 109-acre, traditional New England campus in Lewiston, Maine, a lively small city enjoying an exciting economic and cultural revitalization. With an engaged citizenry, lively arts scene, and historic downtown, this walkable city is 35 miles north of Portland, 140 miles north of Boston, and 340 miles north of New York City.
The Position
The Assistant Director of Athletics for Athletic Performance is responsible for providing leadership, management and oversight of the student-athlete performance program for Bates College intercollegiate sports. The position will perform professional and provide administrative management services in the areas of strength and conditioning, nutrition, athletic training and sports medicine to optimize student-athlete performance, health and safety. The Assistant Director of Athletics will be the primary point of contact for the Office of Athletic Performance in leading coordination of care for student-athletes with Bates Health Services (BHS) and Central Maine Medical Center (CMMC). The Assistant Director of Athletics for Athletic Performance must follow the athletic philosophy consistent with that of the Department of Athletics, NESCAC and NCAA. The Office of Athletic Performance celebrates and honors difference, engages students of all backgrounds and strives to ensure accessible services for all student-athletes. With an increasingly racially and culturally diverse student body, our ideal candidate will view their work through a lens of support, equity and inclusion.
Under Maine §3477. Person Mandated to report suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation, the Assistant Director of Athletics for Athletic Performance is a mandated reporter of known or suspected abuse, neglect or exploitation of an adult if they believe the adult is incapacitated or dependent.
Under Maine §4011-A. Reporting of suspected abuse or neglect, the law also states that certain people, like an Assistant Director of Athletics for Athletic Performance, must report to the Department of Health and Human Services, Child Protection if they know or have reasonable cause to suspect that a child has been or is likely to be abused or neglected.
This is a full-time, 12 month position. Expected to work early morning and night weekdays, weekends, holidays, and travel with athletic teams as determined by the ADAAP.
Athletics
Bates is a member of NCAA Division III and one of 11 institutions in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC). NESCAC consistently performs as the top conference in Division III, as well as leading virtually all rankings that measure the quality of liberal arts colleges.
Bates features 31 varsity sports and claims a long and proud history of athletic achievement. Recent successes include an NCAA National Championship in Women’s Rowing (2015, 2017), a National College Squash Association Individual Men’s National Champion (2015 and 2016), and an NCAA Indoor Shot Put National Champion (2011-2013). Multiple teams and individual student-athletes have achieved NCAA post-season appearances in recent years, and Bates reached its highest finish in the Learfield Director’s Cup standings, ranking 20th out of 451 NCAA Division III institutions. Additionally, Bates student-athletes routinely receive All-NESCAC and All-American recognition for both athletic and academic achievements.
Experienced and dedicated coaches, many of whom have won NESCAC coach of the year honors, lead Bates’ varsity teams. They also care deeply for the well-being and development of their student-athletes. Just as a hallmark of a Bates education is the deep and personal engagement between students and faculty, Bates coaches and student-athletes enjoy strong relationships that epitomize the college’s aim to “educate the whole person.”
The college also hosts 24 club sports and, typically, 10 intramural leagues. More than 63% of Bates students participate in some form of formal athletic competition every year, with approximately 40% of the student body competing as varsity athletes. The Department of Athletics oversees physical education requirements for all Bates students as well as general fitness and recreation for the entire Bates community.
Bates has made significant improvements to athletics infrastructure in recent years, including a major renovation to its historic Garcelon Field, a new rowing boathouse, a new field hockey turf, a new batting facility, and investments in women’s basketball, Nordic skiing, softball, squash, and volleyball facilities.
Bates benefits from a strong base of loyal fans, alumni, and parents. Consistent with the college’s recent overall fundraising success, annual donations to Athletics have increased by 58% in the past five years.
