Position:Houghton College, Athletics Director Reports To: Vice President for Student Life
Overview: The Athletics Director (AD) provides vision and strategic direction for all aspects of Houghton College’s Highlander intercollegiate athletics department. Following a “scholar-servant-athlete” approach, the AD guides all decisions around department budgets, hiring Christ-centered, qualified personnel, strategic planning, public relations, marketing, and general operations. The AD will have knowledge of, oversee, and comply with all rules and regulations set forth by the NCCAA, NCAA Division III, Empire 8 Conference, and Houghton College.
Qualifications: A bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited institution, with a master’s degree strongly preferred; at least five (5) years of successful administrative experience at an NCAA Division III institution preferred.
Special consideration will be given to candidates with leadership experience in a Christian organization or college.

Essential Functions:
•Provide direction for the long-term vision of the Department of Athletics and Recreation, in the context of Houghton’s Christian, liberal arts educational mission.
•Provide leadership to ensure that the intercollegiate athletics programs advance the mission statements of Houghton College, our athletics department, NCCAA, and NCAA Division III.
•Recruit, retain, and mentor the coaching staff, fostering a commitment to the transformational growth of the scholar-servant-athlete, a high level of competitive excellence, and clear goal setting and accountability.
•Foster an innovative culture around inclusive excellence, equity, and diversity among all staff, student-athletes, and volunteer personnel. •Act as the official representative of the college athletics department to outside organizations and agencies.
•Ensure the highest standards of integrity in financial and business matters.
•Ensure that the athletics department has a highly competent and diverse administrative, coaching, and support staff.
•Ensure understanding of and compliance with Title IX regulations across all athletics programming.
•Coordinate department prioritization efforts with Advancement staff on Athletics Advisory Board, Highlander Club, and athletics sponsorships, gifts, and pledges.
•Coordinate recruiting and admissions efforts with the Office of Admission.
•Oversee the maintenance of ideal roster sizes in each sport.
•Ensure opportunities for community involvement, partnerships, and service initiatives.
•Monitor control of the department budget and approve all purchase orders and check requests.
•Partner with Conference Services to maximize revenue opportunities for the Kerr-Pegula Athletic Complex and other athletics facilities. •Oversee the Athletic Training Staff.
•Guide scheduling of conference contests.
•Attend as many home and post-season away athletics events as possible.
•Assist with the hiring and supervising of student workers.
•Work closely with the Associate AD for Sports Information & Compliance to ensure timely and creative publicity of the athletics program and compliance.
•Supervise and schedule regular department staff meetings.
•Assign and communicate regularly with the SAAC department representative.
•Represent the athletics department with appropriate college committees.
•Provide for professional growth opportunities for the athletics staff.
•Review all annual NCAA team roster lists.
•Meet bi-weekly with the Vice President for Student Life (ADR) and regularly with the President and the Faculty Athletics Representative. •Perform other duties as assigned by the VP for Student Life (ADR).
Compensation and Benefits: The Director of Athletics is paid on a salary basis at the rate established by Houghton College. The policies concerning compensation and benefits are explained in detail in the Staff Handbook. This is a 12-month administrative position.
