The Director of Athletics is responsible for providing leadership and management for the college’s intercollegiate athletics program in a way that promotes Davidson’s vision and purpose. As a premier liberal arts college that prepares talented students for lives of leadership, service, and impact, Davidson maintains a competitive Division I sports program because it serves the college’s educational mission. Davidson College participates in 11 men’s and 10 women’s NCAA Division I varsity sports.
The Director represents the college’s athletic interests in its many relationships with students, staff, faculty, alumni, friends, and athletic organizations, and seeks to promote the vision that a liberal arts school of 2,000 students with the highest academic and ethical standards can play to win at the most competitive national level.
Duties and Responsibilities
•Build and sustain an athletic program that best positions Davidson to compete and win at the conference and national level while furthering the educational mission of the college through athletics.
•Recruit, enroll and educate the best scholar athletes and prepare them for lives of leadership.
•Promote programs of distinction with a comprehensive marketing and communications strategy designed to enhance national awareness of Davidson’s distinctive values and educational environment.
•Collaborate effectively with the Vice President of College Relations, the Associate Vice President for Development and the Associate Athletic Director for Development to exceed athletic fundraising goals.
•Ensure compliance with NCAA, A-10, Pioneer Football League, Southern Conference, and Title IX rules and regulations.
•Recruit, retain, lead, and inspire high-performing coaches and athletic administrators.
•Develop shared departmental goals and a culture of excellence for the athletics department.
•Build a sense of community and collective identity among scholar athletes, coaches, athletic administrators, faculty, alumni and supporters.
•Drive excitement and awareness around the athletic programs and events to increase fan interest.
•Recommend and facilitate enhancements to athletic facilities comparable to peer institutions.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred.
• Commitment to a competitive intercollegiate athletics program in the context of an academically rigorous environment.
• Demonstrated record of ensuring the physical and emotional well-being of scholar athletes.
• Superior leadership, management, supervisory, public relations, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work successfully with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and professional colleagues.
• Commitment to integrity, honesty, diversity, equity and accountability.
• Experience and proven success in the areas of fundraising, scholarships, and fiscal stewardship.
