As a highly selective, nationally renowned, and internationally oriented four-year college of arts and sciences located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, Kalamazoo College has developed a tradition of excellence in the fulfillment of its mission. Founded in 1833, Kalamazoo College is among the 100 oldest colleges and universities in the nation. Enrolling 1,436 students from 43 states and 28 countries, Kalamazoo offers an academic program, the K-Plan, which consists of a four-part, integrated approach to education in the liberal arts and sciences with a focus on experiential education. Kalamazoo College is a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA), the oldest collegiate athletics conference in the nation, and a Division III institution. The Kalamazoo Hornets athletic program sponsors nine women’s and nine men’s sports, with approximately 25 percent of Kalamazoo students participating in intercollegiate athletics.
The athletic director supervises the athletic program, including fitness and wellness; coordinates the physical education graduation requirement; and develops, implements, and coordinates the department’s philosophy and goals in conjunction with Kalamazoo stakeholders including faculty, alumni, and student-athletes. Reporting to the provost, the director oversees department operations as well as implementing and maintaining policies, procedures, and guidelines for managing the athletics department. The director will implement and monitor fiscal planning and budget management, supervise staff and coaches, formulate long term planning for the department, and serve as the primary advocate for Kalamazoo athletics in the community.
The director works closely with the advancement office to assist and support all athletic-related fundraising efforts. Kalamazoo, until March of 2019, is under NCAA probation, with additional sanctions imposed by the MIAA, after acknowledging major violations in 2016 related to awarding of financial aid, recruitment practices, and failure to monitor financial aid regulations.
The director is responsible for leading the athletics program in recruiting highly successful head coaches and athletics staff, promoting a unified, best practices department, and ensuring a culture of compliance throughout the athletic program and with other offices that have MIAA and NCAA compliance requirements. The director will lead the department in ensuring that academics is a priority for student-athletes, that an environment of competitiveness is projected by all athletics stakeholders, and will support the institution’s commitment to ensuring a diverse and inclusive educational, co-curricular and athletic experience. The director manages an organization with an annual budget of approximately $2.4 million, 18 varsity sports, 336 student-athletes, and a staff of 50 inclusive of full and part-time coaches, trainers, and administrative staff. Representing the College and the interests of its officers, student-athletes, coaches, and staff in service to the NCAA and the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletics Association is also an important responsibility of the director.
A bachelor’s degree and demonstrated experience of administration within an intercollegiate athletics program are required, a master’s degree is preferred. The successful candidate will possess a detailed understanding of intercollegiate athletics administration, current and best practices in the delivery of amateur athletic programs, challenges faced by student-athletes, and supervision and leadership of staff. Administrative budgeting and financial recordkeeping, control procedures, and NCAA compliance within a Division III environment will also be required of the new director. Experience in fundraising, donor stewardship, and athletic development activities as well as a willingness to embrace and articulate the NCAA Division III and MIAA philosophies, rules, and regulations will be important considerations in the selection of the next athletic director.
