Job Summary:
Core responsibilities of this position include: The Director of Athletics is responsible for the planning, operation and administration of the Athletics and Recreational Activities department including the Recreation and Athletics Complex (RAC) facility. These responsibilities include but are not limited to: directs, coordinates and develops an NJCAA and NIRA collegiate athletic program that includes men’s/women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s/women’s basketball, rodeo; as well as student recreational programs, and oversees the administrative, marketing and fund raising activities that support the athletic programs. Supports academic goals of student athletes to ensure their academic success at LCCC. Directs, coordinates, and develops community recreational programming appropriate for the facilities, including intramural sports to create an engaged student body; and programs to engage the community including, but not limited to summer camps for community and youth.
Other tasks may be assigned based on contemporary institutional need.
Essential Functions:
Department Administration:
Serve as an active member of the Student Services Leadership team supporting department functions, procedures, goals, and strategic plans Provide administrative leadership and budgetary oversight for all areas of responsibility Actively lead employees, programs, and areas of responsibility in support of the College’s strategic plan and mission Lead Athletics and Campus Recreation in annual functional assessment of all areas and periodic full program assessment in support of continuous improvement in all areas Collaborate with College marketing and public relations department to arrange for marketing and communications of athletics, community, and campus recreational programs Steward campus, foundation, and student fee resources judiciously and with integrity Act as “spokesperson” to promote and advocate for all areas of responsibility Intentionally recommend, supervise, manage, and develop staff to their full potential and in support of the mission of the College Collaborate with and support the functions of the College divisions and departments by completing necessary procedures and forms as they relate to the operations the position’s areas of responsibility Evaluate employee performance and complete performance appraisals per required time lines; work to improve employee performance through training, mentoring, and coaching Determine if employees have the appropriate tools to complete job tasks and addresses obstacles to their doing so Collegiate Athletics:
Plan, direct and evaluate the operational, financial and personnel activities of the athletics department Develop and implement five year athletic plan including a full range of athletic department services and programs Provide leadership for fund raising activities and collaborate closely with the LCCC Foundation and Booster Club Coordinate youth camps and clinics for community youth both as recruitment and as fund raising efforts Prepare and manage annual Athletic Department budget and RAC facility budget Allocate institutional and Foundation scholarship budgets among various sports equitably and in collaboration with Financial Aid staff and Foundation staff Prepare NJCAA eligibility reports for all sports Prepare NJCAA letters of intent for all sports Administer intercollegiate athletics program; supervise and evaluate coaches; schedule or coordinate the scheduling of athletics contests; contract with game officials; arrange for event supervision and management Serve as the institution’s athletics compliance coordinator for Title IX, NJCAA, NIRA, etc. Oversee production of athletic handbooks, bulletins, master athletic calendars Coordinate College vehicles for athletics travel Develop and provide a variety of student services and programs such as student athletic recruitment and retention, academic tracking, athletic eligibility, health and safety; work with Dean of Students and Vice President of Student Services in matters of student athlete discipline Recreation & Athletic Complex Facilities
Develop, implement and administer departmental and facility operating policies and procedures Supervise utilization of the RAC facilities Recommend and review policies for student and community use of facilities In consultation with instructional personnel, coordinate athletic uses of training, weight room and other common facilities Coordinate with College departments on the planning and use of RAC facilities for non-departmental events Campus Recreation and Community Programming
Oversee the development, offerings, and evaluation of intramural and other recreation and fitness-related activities for the student body at LCCC Collaborate with other Student Services and campus entities to implement recreational activities for students Coordinate community sports programs such as youth sports camps to engage the community in LCCC athletics and facilities Nonessential Functions:
An employee in this position may perform some of these responsibilities on an infrequent basis.
May occasionally serve in as ‘fill-in’ for various Head Coach/Assistant Coach roles as needed Represent LCCC in various professional organizations throughout the year, and act in an ambassador role as needed Participate in vendor selection, negotiation meetings, contract reviews, etc. as applicable to the Athletic Programs at LCCC Serve and participate on various institutional committees and project teams as appointed
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Excellent oral and written communication skills, especially in media relations and sports marketing
Knowledge of acceptable athletics program standards and operations Knowledge of NJCAA and NIRA rules and regulations
Ability to maintain high level of professionalism and ethical standards in all areas of responsibility
Proficient budgeting and financial record keeping and control procedures
Ability to integrate multiple activities and programs around the goals of the athletics program and the mission of the College Ability to effectively present information to all levels within the organization (executive management to front line employees), public groups, and/or the Board of Trustees
Ability to read and interpret instructions in oral, written, or diagrammatical form (e.g., a flow chart of a process)
Ability to read, interpret and consider possible applications of business literature and legal documents
Skills and abilities to perform as an organized, self-starter, and able to act on own initiative while exercising reasonable judgment
Ability to support time-based requests; able to function effectively in a multi-tasking, fast-paced environment with deadlines, frequent interruptions, and interpersonal pressure
Ability to deal effectively and professionally with people at all levels and; proven capabilities in establishing appropriate professional rapport, with courtesy and tact, to accurately determine other’s needs, collect necessary information, and follow-through when requested Ability to respond to common internal and external inquiries from LCCC staff, students, regulatory agencies, vendors, regional business community, student/local/regional media, and others as may be necessary
Proficient working knowledge and ability with personal computing applications – specifically Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint), Adobe products (e.g., Reader, Professional), as well as database management systems Knowledge of basic office equipment including (but not limited to) personal computer and associated peripherals, fax machine, smart phone, tablet devices, voice recorders, and other electronic devices
Ability to establish employee expectations, performance objectives, methods to measure accomplishments, and provide effective feedback Physical/Mental Demands:
To successfully perform the essential functions of this position, an employee must be able to maintain appropriate composure and necessary confidentiality with regard to both past and current employee, student, and donor data; documents; issues; etc., and respect privacy needs of employees, students, donors
The ability to comply with highly inflexible deadlines is required for the essential functions of this position; there will be multiple occurrences of sudden, urgent task completion required
While performing the essential functions of this position a variable work schedule may be required including long workdays, evenings, and weekends as needed
There may be occurrences of interacting with employees and/or students, past employees and/or students, members of the general public, and others who express opinions, may exhibit strong emotions, which will require the employee to interact professionally, diplomatically, and appropriately in such situations
While performing the essential duties of this position, an employee would frequently be required to move around office space, athletic facilities, athletic fields and other venues, as well as within hallways, meeting rooms, and other parts of LCCC campus facilities as well as similar on other campuses or alternative locations
There may be multiple/daily instances of prolonged sitting, standing, and personal computer use, which would include keyboard and/or mouse usage as well as viewing a computer monitor
An employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds to perform essential position functions
Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus
To successfully perform in this role, an employee must be able to address small groups, mid-size groups and on occasion, very large groups for public announcements, speeches, fundraising activities/requests, etc.; there may be multiple instances of this type of ‘public address’ role
The overall work environment requires the mental ability to shift focal point quickly due to interruptions; an employee must be able to mentally track multiple projects and tasking as well
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, there may be unexpected instances of somewhat loud sounds
Qualifications
Minimum:
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in education, physical education, sports management, or related field
• Three or more years of athletic administrative/management experience
• Three or more years of supervisory experience
• Possession of or ability to obtain, a valid Driver’s License
• One-year of program fund raising experience
Preferred:
• Master’s degree from an accredited institution in education, physical education, sports management, or related field
• Three or more years of collegiate level coaching experience, preferably at the community college level
• English/Spanish bilingual
