Job Summary:
The primary goal of the athletic program at Spartanburg Methodist College is to support the personal, academic, spiritual and character development of student athletes within the framework of sports.
The Athletic Director is responsible for providing visionary leadership and creating an environment which allows this primary goal to be met.
The Athletic Director plans, implements, directs and supervises all aspects of the Athletic program in a manner that sets a standard of excellence in academic and athletic performance and upholds integrity in all aspects of the work of the department. The Athletic Director works collaboratively and collegially with other campus offices to further the mission of the College, advance academics, and promote campus citizenship.
Primary Responsibilities:
•Recruit, supervise and evaluate all full-time and part-time coaches and assistant coaches and the Administrative Assistant/Budget & Financial Manager.
•Develop a recruitment plan with the Admissions Office and Financial Aid Office to attract excellent student-athletes to meet the recruiting goals of the College and participate fully in implementing the plan.
•Develop policies and procedures for the Athletic Department to ensure compliance with College, NJCAA and federal rules and regulations.
•Oversee and direct the training and development of student-athletes who will represent the College with skill and sportsmanship and will serve as positive role models for the College community.
•Develop and implement strategies for motivating student-athletes to perform at maximum levels both as individuals and a team.
•Work closely with all College departments to advance student-athlete academic progress and potential.
•Instruct student-athletes on personal and athletic development, including counseling student athletes on academic and disciplinary matters when appropriate.
•Identify Athletic Department facility and program needs and with the Vice President for Institutional Advancement develops fundraising plans to meet those needs. Lead and monitor the fund-raising efforts of all Athletic teams.
•Work with the Director of Sports Information and the Vice President for Marketing to promote and publicize the achievements of the athletic program and individual athletics on campus and in the community.
•Represent the College at NJCAA Region X meetings and other professional events.
•Ensure compliance with all NJCAA regulations and that appropriate documentation is prepared and submitted in according to NJCAA guidelines.
•Ensure that student eligibility records are accurate and maintained in accordance with NJCAA regulations and College policy and that student eligibility is submitted accurately to the NJCAA.
•Accept public speaking engagements, cultivate opportunities to further the image of the College in the local community and serve as a visible leader on campus in the community.
•Manage all home athletic events and attend those events. Designate a full-time staff member to be present in his/her absence. •Encourage attendance at athletic events.
•Coordinate the planning and implementation of all Athletic Department events.
•Develop and maintain a balanced operating budget for the Athletic Department and monitor the budgets for each athletic team. •Coordinate and schedule the use of all athletic facilities by the athletic program for game and practice time and make necessary requests for maintenance to ensure that all venues are in optimal condition for safety and to provide an excellent impression of the College. •Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, inclusion and gender equity.
•Create long-term player development plans for the technical, tactical and physical development.
•Oversee conditioning and training of student-athletes in conjunction with the Athletic Trainer to ensure that student-athletes are physically prepared for competition and that best practices have been implemented to prevent sports-related injuries and to facilitate recovery from sports-related injuries.
•Conduct staff meetings involving members of the Athletic Department.
•Prepare internal and external reports for the Board of Trustees, the President’s cabinet and accrediting agencies as needed or requested. •Perform other duties as assigned by the President of the College.
• Knowledge of and ability to adhere to all policies, rules and regulations of the College, Region X and the NJCAA.
• Knowledge of the basic principles of athletic administration and the ability to communicate effective coaching principles and techniques.
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
• Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information discretely.
• Ability to establish positive working relationships with individuals with diverse backgrounds.
• Excellent organizational skills and efficiency in recordkeeping.
• Ability to establish positive working relationships with members of the College community and members of the public.
• Attention to detail and follow through.
• Ability to work independently to perform assigned tasks.
• Experience: Coaching and administrative experience at the college level.
