The Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) and the Department of Athletics & Recreation is seeking an Executive Director of Development, Athletics for the George Washington University (GW).
DAR works hand-in-hand with the Department of Athletics & Recreation to maximize philanthropy at all levels to support GW’s athletics & recreation programs and student athletes. The development office in Athletics works with its constituents (student athletes, athlete alumni, athlete parents and friends of the program) to raise money through major and principal gifts and the annual fund, known as the Buff & Blue Fund which includes leadership annual giving and Colonials Club Membership. DAR is in close partnership with the acting Director of Athletics and the members of the senior team within Athletics to think strategically about how to engage these constituents and maximize philanthropic dollars in support of GW’s 27 varsity sports, club and recreational teams.
Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Assistant Vice President, University Programs, this position will set the strategic direction for the Athletic Development Program and manage a pool of 50-75 major and principal gift prospects for support of athletic programs. The Executive Director of Athletics Development will cultivate and solicit prospects via email, phone, letters, and personal visits in order to meet major gift metric targets and sustain and grow annual attainment of $2 million to $3 million. This position is responsible for engaging parents and volunteers in the development effort as well as setting the strategic direction for Athletic Alumni Relations while working in consultation with GW’s Office of Alumni Relations. This position will manage a team of three (two fundraisers and one administrative staff member) and direct their development efforts to ensure fundraising success.
Develops athletics fundraising program elements with both short- and long-term engagement and attainment goals with the purpose of qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies. Manages program partnerships with Family Philanthropy, Alumni Relations, Annual Giving, and other campus and DAR offices. Oversees and manages athletics fundraising program budget.
In collaboration with the Athletic Director engages and grows an active Athletics Advisory Council of volunteers who serve as an extension of the staff, assisting with fundraising including engagement events, peer outreach, and prospect identification.
Collaborates with the Regional Alumni Relations team to create a calendar of athletics alumni events across the country. Works closely with the Annual Giving and Family Philanthropy team to execute direct mail and electronic solicitations of constituents.
Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with school/unit fundraisers, deans, directors, coaches, faculty, marketing, sponsorship, ticket sales, and central development colleagues including the Family Philanthropy Team, Principal Giving, Planned Giving, Annual Giving, and Corporate and Foundation giving to maximize development efforts.
This position will perform other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 8 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree or higher in a relevant area of study plus 6 years of relevant professional experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
