The Saint Joseph’s University intercollegiate athletics program is affiliated with the NCAA and is comprised of 20 Division I men and women’s programs. The teams compete in the Atlantic-10 Conference, with the exception of Men’s Lacrosse (Northeast Conference). SJU is also a member of the storied Philadelphia Big 5.

Position Summary
The Athletic Director (AD) is responsible for providing vision, leadership and oversight for SJU’s intercollegiate athletics program. The AD works collaboratively with all SJU entities in leading the intercollegiate athletics program, in support of the University’s distinctive Catholic, Jesuit mission. The AD reports directly to the President and serves on the President’s Advisory Council and the University Leadership Council.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Provide strategic and visionary leadership to the Athletic Department, while maintaining a visible and energetic presence within the broader campus community.
• Promote a culture of competitive excellence resulting in post-season appearances and enhancing the national prominence of the University, particularly with men and women’s basketball.
• Build a department that shares the university’s commitment to a culture of openness and inclusion that values diversity in people and ideas. • Lead and oversee the selection and management of coaches and administrative personnel. Support the professional development of the administrative and coaching staff and promote their accomplishments.
• Uphold and promote the University’s longstanding commitments to academic and athletic excellence.
• Develop and manage budgets for all operational areas of the program ensuring budgetary and fiscal accountability in order to adhere to a balanced budget through enhancing revenue generation and monitoring spending.
• Provide open and transparent dialogue with the department staff and head coaches regarding budgetary decisions and resource allocation.
• Establish Athletics fundraising goals and collaborate with the Office of University Advancement to develop fundraising strategies to meet the strategic priorities. Meet with donors and prospective donors as part of ongoing fundraising activities to enhance financial support for the athletic programs.
• Create new and innovative ways to promote athletics and school spirit not only to the on-campus community, but also to the Greater Philadelphia community and alumni base.
• Enhance a culture of credibility, integrity, and accountability.
• Ensure an environment that supports a positive experience for all student-athletes at Saint Joseph’s University and provides the necessary resources for them to make progress toward, and earn completion of, a meaningful degree.
• Demonstrate a commitment to service and the holistic development of mind, body and spirit.
• Establish policies and procedures ensuring compliance with NCAA, Atlantic-10 and Northeast Conferences and Saint Joseph’s University rules and regulations as well as all applicable federal, state and municipal laws and be held accountable for department-wide compliance. • Work cooperatively and effectively with the entire University community including students, faculty, administrators, staff and alumni, as well as with the media and the public at large to ensure open and transparent lines of communication.
• Participate actively in athletic conference meetings and activities.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s degree is preferred.
• Excellent communication skills and experience in building and maintaining collaborative relationships across a wide variety of constituents including alumni, fans, media, donors, students, faculty, staff and friends of the University.
• Proven success in fundraising, including cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors.
• Demonstrated commitment to a culture of integrity, respect, professionalism, and sportsmanship in all levels of the Athletic Department. • Ability to meet the goal of enhancing the student-athlete experience and the core values of a Catholic and Jesuit institution.
• Demonstrated ability to recruit and hire outstanding coaches and staff.
• Experience working with men and women’s basketball is preferred.
• Experience and innovation with human resource and fiscal management; demonstrated financial acumen.
• Demonstrated knowledge of intercollegiate athletics compliance.
• Commitment to a competitive intercollegiate athletics program in the context of an academically rigorous collegiate environment.
