This University Development Officer serves as the Senior Associate Athletic Director/Director "Sr. Director" of Athletic Development for Intercollegiate Athletics ("Athletics"). As a "senior" member of the Development Office staff, works to optimize philanthropic support for Athletics, in response to priorities established by the Athletics Director.
The Sr. Director focuses about 60 percent time on leadership/major gift ($1M+) fund raising activities and 20 percent time on gifts of $100K - $1M. Directly responsible for raising $1M annually and $2M as a team. Additional 20 percent is focused on other activities related to fund raising, and administrative duties such as management, planning, coordinating and executing aspects of the Athletics development program and special campus-wide initiatives projects.
With regard to major gift fund raising, the Sr. Director is responsible for cultivation, solicitation, closing and stewardship of gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations. Works personally with top donor prospects and supports the Athletics Director in order to maximize philanthropic support for Athletics and UC Santa Barbara, raising gifts to meet identified fund raising priorities.
Sr. Director works to ensure that all aspects of his/her development program are internally consistent, thematically related, and compatible with the policies and priorities of Athletics, the Development Office and University.
• Minimum of 6 years of major gift experience, including raising six and or seven figure gifts.
• Proven track record of successfully managing current and prospective benefactors at the leadership level.
• Demonstrated skill at gift negotiation and gift solicitation to engage complex and sophisticated individual, corporate, and foundation donors toward significant philanthropic outcomes.
• Demonstrated skill in writing professional, clear, and compelling proposals and other solicitation materials, acknowledgments, reports, public announcements and routine business correspondence.
• Commitment to and ability to articulate the case for higher education, and or UCSB 's Athletics programs in particular.
• Effective verbal communication skills to make persuasive oral presentations to colleagues, internal and external constituencies, and to plan and conduct participatory meetings, to gain acceptance of decisions, and to advise and collaborate with others.
• Knowledge of office and productivity software sufficient to function smoothly in a highly technology-based environment (including but not limited to word processing, spreadsheet, database, email, and Internet applications).
• Ambition and motivation that values a collaborative working environment and who will be able to establish strong, interpersonal relationships with academic leaders, faculty, community leaders, donors, volunteers, and other staff.
• Experience in conceptualizing, planning, and implementing customized donor cultivation activities, such as dinners, luncheons, receptions, meetings, and tours.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, under deadlines, without close supervision; self-direction in the initiation, coordination and completion of tasks, acute attention to detail is essential.
• Outstanding social skills, instincts, discretion and judgment, coupled with strong personal ethics.
• Strong strategic thinking skills aligned with the ability to implement and follow through.
• Understanding and/or experience working within the environment of a large, public research university (and in particular within a university athletics program).
• Understanding of operating, capital and endowment fund development.
• Willingness to accept responsibilities and assignments and to handle them thoroughly.
• Sensitivity to long-term relationship building and stewardship with donors and potential donors.
• The ability to establish a cooperative working relationship with staff; the ability to work as a member of a team, and to support the Development Office structure, obtaining approvals and coordinating as needed.
• The ability to handle problems as they occur, and follow through on all aspects of the position.
• Ability to work comfortably with a flexible work schedule, including travel for major donor cultivation and some evening and weekend work.
• Proven success in goal achievement.
Other desirable requirements:
• Prior experience in or significant understanding of intercollegiate athletics.
• Track record of engaging industry effectively toward funding goals and philanthropic outcomes.
• A general understanding of planned giving.
• Sensitivity to long-term relationship building and stewardship with donors and potential donors.
• High level of initiative, creativity and energy.
