About the University
The University of North Dakota (UND) invites applications and nominations for the position of Athletics Director. The successful candidate will lead UND’s Athletic Department which recently won the 2017 Big Sky Conference President’s Cup. To facilitate a competitive advantage for student athletes, UND Athletics completed the reclassification to National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I for all sports and became eligible for NCAA Division I postseason play for all sports in 2012.
UND sponsors athletic programs in men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, football, men’s and women’s golf, men’s ice hockey, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field, and women’s volleyball. With an elite men’s ice hockey program that boasts eight Division I national championships, North Dakota won Big Sky Conference Championships in football, volleyball, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball during the 2016–2017 academic year.
UND’s men’s ice hockey competes in the nation’s premier hockey conference, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, in which UND is a charter member. The 2017 football season will be the last official season in the Big Sky Conference before an already-completed 2-year independent schedule in 2018 and 2019 begins. The 2020 season will be the football program’s first year in the Missouri Valley Football Conference. All other sponsored programs are playing their final year in the Big Sky Conference during the 2017–2018 academic year and will officially transition into the Summit League on July 1, 2018.
UND Athletics enjoys an overall facilities portfolio that is top-of-the-line in the Big Sky Conference and the National Collegiate Hockey Conference. Annual fund records have been set each of the last 9 years, exceeding nearly $3,000,000 in 2016–2017. Revenue from ticket sales have increased each of the last 6 years and are on track for over $5,000,000 in 2017–2018.
UND is located in Grand Forks, North Dakota, a college town of 57,000 within a metropolitan area of 76,000 on the Red River of the North bordering Minnesota. UND enrolls nearly 15,000 students in 200+ fields of study from baccalaureate through doctoral and professional degrees. The University prides itself in supporting student athletes who excel on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. UND’s student athletes have achieved a collective GPA of 3.0 or higher in every semester since the University transitioned to Division I in 2008–09.

Position Summary
The Athletics Director reports to the President and provides strong leadership, fund-raising, and oversight for an NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics program.
Position Responsibilities
•Serves as a member of the President’s Cabinet. Develops constructive and collegial relationships with all members of the Cabinet. •Provides leadership to an Athletic Department that shares the University’s commitment to student success and community engagement. •Participates and provides leadership in conference meetings and activities.
•Participates in national activities of the NCAA and provides leadership in that organization when appropriate.
•Is accountable for all NCAA compliance regulations and federal laws.
•Participates in negotiating facility agreements and developing long-term relationships with external partners.
•Establishes effective communications with faculty, staff, student athletes, and student leaders and the various shared governance organizations, including those at the North Dakota University System level when appropriate.
•Nurtures an effective administrative and coaching team in the Athletic Department and encourages professional growth, creativity, and commitment in Athletic Department employees.
•Supports and extends the University’s commitment to diversity and inclusion.
•Works in close collaboration with the UND Alumni Association and Foundation to develop and deliver a vigorous fund-raising program in support of Fighting Hawks Athletics and, where appropriate, other important programs of the University.
•Develops and maintains a high level of community interaction in support of Fighting Hawks Athletics and the University mission and vision.
•Maintains a high level of collaboration with key contractors and partners of the Athletic Department.
Position Information
This position is full-time, benefited, and exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
Salary for this position will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
In addition to a full criminal history background check, this position is subject to verification of degree(s) and driving record.

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree preferred.
• Direct experience in NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics for 5 years preferred.
• Significant demonstrated experience in strategic leadership, financial and personnel management, communications, decision-making, teamwork, and innovation applied at the senior leadership level.
• Significant successful college athletic administrative experience with knowledge of NCAA regulations and certification procedures, Title IX compliance, and fiscal and operational complexities of an intercollegiate athletics program.
• Demonstrated fund development and/or revenue generation experience.
• Demonstrated ability to build consensus and cooperation among athletic staff and other stakeholders and navigate difficult environments when necessary.
• Experience in negotiating facility agreements and developing long-term relationships with external partners.
• Experience with budget development and management.
