Director of Athletics and OPERS, UC Santa Cruz

Position Summary:
The Director of Athletics and OPERS reports to the Vice Chancellor for Business & Administrative Services. The Director of Athletics is responsible for the day-to-day management of and long-range planning for the UC Santa Cruz Office of Physical Education, Recreation and Sports (OPERS), which includes its NCAA Division III athletics program that sponsors 15 men’s and women’s varsity teams. The University is committed to a program that operates with the highest integrity and is focused on the total development of its students.
The Director of Athletics and OPERS is responsible for providing leadership of the University’s physical education, recreation, intramurals and club sports programs and advancing a competitive intercollegiate athletics program within the context of the University’s primary mission of educational excellence and ensuring an exceptional student experience. The Director of Athletics and OPERS is responsible for managing and conducting a program that adheres to all federal and state laws, including Title IX and NCAA, and University rules and regulations.
The Director of Athletics and OPERS (a) oversees the hiring and retention of, as well as the terms and conditions of employment for all physical education, recreation, intramurals and sports staff, including head coaches; (b) supervises staff; (c) and promotes their professional development. The Director of Athletics and OPERS promotes diversity in hiring staff and head coaches and in recruiting student-athletes creating an atmosphere of inclusiveness and respect.
The Director of Athletics and OPERS is responsible for establishing and maintaining the department’s budgets, practicing fiscal discipline, enhancing revenue streams, and overseeing athletic facilities in collaboration with the University Facilities Department.
The Director of Athletics and OPERS provides leadership and innovation in fundraising and revenue development, collaborating with University Relations to identify funding priorities and successfully execute fundraising strategies.
The Director of Athletics and OPERS represents the University and the department to internal and external audiences, promoting the program in ways that reflect well on the University and foster a spirit of engagement. The Director of Athletics and OPERS provides leadership within the University, in the community, and nationally; serving on committees, working effectively and collegially with partners across campus, interacting positively with alumni and friends of the University, and serving as a spokesperson on athletics with the news media.
Qualifications and Experience:
At least 5 years of progressively responsible experience managing and leading a team, preferably in intercollegiate athletics administration or a related field; a record of achievement in athletics administration and ability to navigate changes in the landscape of intercollegiate athletics; strong personal integrity; a commitment to collaboration across the institution; and experience in a campus environment that reflects the UC Santa Cruz's values, emphasis on student success, and unique position in Division III athletics.
