We are looking for self-directed individuals who thrive in a collaborative work environment, and have successfully led fund development efforts for more than 7 years. With the goal of building a fundraising campaign that will generate more than $125,000,000, the ideal candidate demonstrates the ability to see the big picture while maintaining excellent attention to detail. The Director of Development is a frontline fundraising position with specific expertise in areas of program management, portfolio management, relationship building, staff supervision, and donor engagement.
Reporting to the Head of the USGA Foundation, responsibilities for the Director of Development include designing and implementing a comprehensive fundraising plan, supervising a team of fundraising and donor relations professionals, stewarding a portfolio of donors with the capacity and inclination of making gifts between $100,000 and $1,000,000.
Key measures of success will include maximizing donor revenue through data-driven acquisition, impact-focused communications and an engaging donor experience tailored to donor interests and preferences.
What You Can Expect:
• Program and Portfolio Management: Provide guidance and direction in setting and achieving clear fundraising targets. Develop close meaningful relationships with members, supporters and donor prospects. Successfully steward a portfolio of major donors making gifts between $100,000 and $1,000,000. Responsibilities include full donor cycle of identification, cultivation, solicitation and engagement. Research donors and prospects as appropriate to build pipeline and tailor solicitation. Develop and execute personalized donor communication, solicitation and stewardship strategies. Ensure donor details and engagement activities are up-to-date in fundraising CRM system. Represent the USGA with partners, members, and donor prospects.
• Staff Supervision & Collaboration: Hire and supervise an expanding team of gift officers and donor relations professionals who will work on-site as well as remotely across the country. Lead cross-department collaboration to execute the strategic and financial objectives of the USGA Foundation. Provides weekly reports to the Head of the USGA Foundation. Collaborate closely with marketing staff to conceptualize, plan and execute events in a way that maximizes exposure and opportunities for revenue enhancement.
• Strategy and Vision: Serve as a lead fundraising strategist for the USGA Foundation. Apply critical analysis to fundraising objectives to determine best paths forward with the ultimate goals of securing support and building the giving pipeline. Responsible for advancing fundraising program including strategy, vision and annual fundraising plans. Oversee the development of a longterm campaign and legacy giving program. Drive efforts to conduct feasibility study for endowment campaign readiness.
• Donor & Volunteer Engagement:Build a qualified prospect base to develop robust donor pipeline for all levels of giving. Create and implement an engaging donor stewardship program including recognition societies.As needed, provide support to Trustee Council and fundraising leaders. Produce and/or support fundraising events as required, with emphasis on events around the Founders Circle Dinner, Annual Meeting, US Open Championships and Innovation Symposium. Actively participate within the golf community by attending partner (PGA, LPGA, The First Tee, etc.) events. Conduct leadership briefings, Cocktails & Conversations, Thought-leader Dinners, and other signature engagement and solicitation events.
What You Bring to the USGA:
• The ideal candidate MUST HAVE: 7 years of demonstrated success in fundraising, managing fundraising programs, legacy giving, and capital campaigns. Experience supervising teams of 5 or more professional fundraising staff. A deep passion for golf and comfort level playing golf with current and potential donors
• Bachelor’s degree in philanthropy, nonprofit management, business, liberal arts
• Must have a deep passion for golf and embrace the mission of the USGA
• Strong golf skills and comfort level playing golf with potential donors
• Ability to translate strategies into specific objectives and action plans
• Extreme comfort and demonstrated experience closing gifts of $100,000 or more
• Can inspire, engage and motivate staff, board members and other volunteers
• Ability to follow systems and procedures while also exhibiting creative thinking
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and writing skills
• Initiative and competency to take ownership of specific projects
