DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Menlo School seeks an engaged and charismatic leader to direct one of the largest and most complex programs in the School and provide the vision and leadership for planning, organizing, coordinating, and managing all aspects of the 6th through 12th grade Athletic Programs. The next Director of Athletics will join a passionate and dedicated administrative team that is led by Head of School Than Healy, who joined Menlo in 2013. The Athletic Director reports directly to the Head of School and is an integral part of the School’s Senior Administrative Team. ABOUT THE ATHLETICS PROGRAM Menlo’s Athletics Program complements the School’s strong college preparatory program with an extensive offering of competitive team sports, providing students the opportunity to develop mind, body, and character for themselves, their teams, and their school. From the novice to the college-bound athlete, Menlo offers unparalleled opportunity and excellence. Nearly 80 percent of Upper School students participate in at least one sport. Athletes, coaches, and parents together strive to develop a commitment to their team and the courage to try and give their best effort. Athletics allow our students to practice graciousness, respect, and honesty for their teammates, competitors, coaches, and officials while continuing to learn the importance of “sound body, sound mind” through physical conditioning and nutrition. Menlo teams and athletes have reached the highest levels of competition from Northern California regionals to state championships all while abiding by our longstanding commitment toward being your best, accepting responsibility, putting the team first, and behaving with sportsmanship. Menlo Upper School has a long and proud athletic tradition. The School provides 11 boys’ sports and 11 girls’ sports with teams at the freshman, frosh-soph and varsity level. Teams compete in the West Bay Athletic League and Peninsula Athletic League. The Middle School provides all students with the opportunity to participate, build their skills, learn sportsmanship, and learn to be a productive team member in both the intramural and interscholastic programs. In keeping with the School’s mission statement and philosophy, the Athletics program functions as an integral part of the total Menlo School curriculum. Each Middle School student is required to participate daily in either physical education (PE) or as a member of an interscholastic team. It strives to conform to the general objectives of the School by promoting sound learning and strong character.
THE POSITION: DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Menlo School seeks an engaged and charismatic leader to direct one of the largest and most complex programs in the School. This position will provide the vision and leadership for planning, organizing, coordinating, and managing all aspects of the 6th through 12th grade Athletic Programs. The Athletic Director reports directly to the Head of School and is an integral part of the School’s Senior Administrative Team. This is a full-time, 12-month position with a competitive salary and an excellent benefits package. This position will start on July 1, 2018. The Athletic Director will manage a core department of six, which presently includes the Assistant Athletic Director, the Middle School Athletic Director, Sports Information Director, the Athletic Trainer, the Performance Coach, and an administrative assistant as well as 12 full-time coaches, up to 75 seasonal personnel. The Director is responsible for all of the aspects of an outstanding Athletics Department: personnel and budgeting across all sports; efficient coordination of athletic facilities, practice, logistics, and competition schedules; effective management and hiring of coaches, eligibility and compliance processes; student-athlete academic balance, progress and achievements, and quality public relations for all teams. The Director implements and directs Menlo’s athletic programs in compliance with the rules and regulations of CCS Guidelines. The Director also serves as the institutional representative to for Compliance with CCS and other athletic entities.
PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
The ideal candidate will have a deep and abiding passion and delight for athletics and possess a strong commitment to both academic and athletic excellence for our student-athletes. The successful candidate will exemplify integrity and honesty that is above reproach as well as display a love of learning, the ability to be empathic, resilient and ethical and, perhaps most importantly, a strong sense of humor.
•A proven track record of successful management and leadership, preferably in athletic administration either at the high school or collegiate level.
•Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
•Comfort working with a wide variety of constituencies as a relationship-builder, who can converse and interact at any level, influence a variety of stakeholders, and inspire loyalty, respect, and admiration.
•Active and visible support of Athletics, connecting with parents, students, and the wider Menlo Community by attending numerous and frequent contests and games in both Middle and High School.
•Build a climate of trust and collaboration by connecting with and being accessible and available to coaches, students, parents, and the athletic staff.
•The ability to select and maintain a staff of highly qualified and successful head coaches, coaches, and assistant coaches.
•Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills; mentor and train as well as evaluate performance, taking corrective action as needed; deal with stressful situations while maintaining composure; and contribute to a collaborative environment by utilizing exemplary communication.
•The ability to systemize and improve processes for monitoring and ensuring accountability for all fiscal and programmatic operations of the athletic department and each sport.
•With the myriad sports teams, schedules, travel needs, budgets and paperwork, the Athletic Director must be exceptionally organized and detail oriented when overseeing the logistical details involved with schedules, game management, field management, and communication with other schools and the community.
•The natural ability to model key behaviors and characteristics such as: collaboration, teamwork, critical thinking, judgment, priority setting, and constructive behavior.
•Authenticity, transparency, and inspiration.
The candidate is required to have a BA; a master’s degree in Business Management, Sports Administration, or an equivalent discipline is significantly preferred. Ideally, the candidate would have a minimum of five years of prior experience successfully managing an Athletic Department in a secondary school or collegiate athletics program.
This position requires a demonstrated comprehensive understanding of athletics and sports management within the context of a non-denominational, independent college preparatory school. Ultimately, the Athletic Director needs to understand that athletics teaches students the life skills of humility, honesty, integrity, hard work, and accountability; and that these lessons learned as a student-athlete transcend and impact the world long after the season has ended.
