General Summary:
This individual serves as the secondary media relations contact for Intercollegiate Athletics. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to coordinating all media relations activities relevant to assigned sports, including recruiting materials, website and game management, serving as the liaison between the local and national media and our student athletes, and maintaining statistics and records for all assigned sports. This position will also be responsible for managing the athletic media relations student staff.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
Oversee media relations for the department's 21-sport athletic program, including direct day-to-day involvement with at least two programs. Develop and implement social media ideas, as well as, video for the website and ESPN
Update the EMUEagles.com web site and the department's social media on a daily basis.
Create, edit and produce video content for the Eagle All-Access and ESPN3
Assist in the coordination of interviews for key personnel.
Coordinate and schedule interviews for EMU student-athletes.
Travel with EMU teams as needed to handle media relations.
Prepare "game notes" packets for assigned sport(s).
Maintain statistical records for season and historical purposes.
Produce media guides and game programs and assist in production of other marketing materials.
Serve as University liaison with other institutions that we compete against.
Serve as media host for home athletic events.
Approve media credential requests as needed.
Serve as department's secondary spokesperson in crisis situations.
Serve as liaison with the Division of Communications.
Carry a cell phone and be available to media and athletics staff at all hours, including holidays.
Maintain photographic inventory for all 21 programs including scheduling of professional photographers.
Adhere to any and all NCAA, Mid-American Conference and Eastern Michigan University policies, rules, regulations, and operational procedures.
Attend meetings and represent the Department on committees and planning groups.
Perform related departmental duties as required.
Supplemental Information:
Please Note: This posting is for two (2) vacancies. One will serve as the primary media contact for men's basketball and a sport that is yet to be decided. The other will act as the primary media contact for women's basketball and at least one other sport. Final sports assignments will be determined by the Associate AD for Media Relations when both positions are filled.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree is required.
Previous experience serving as a primary media contact for at least one sport is required.
Minimum of two years of experience in media relations, athletics communications or sports information is required.
Graphic design experience and working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud is required.
Ability to create and update graphics using Adobe Photoshop and documents using Adobe InDesign is required.
Direct experience with Stat Crew software (Automated Scorebook) is required.
Knowledge of Social Media Platforms (including but not limited to Twitter, Facebook and Instagram) is required.
Experience with SIDEARM web-editing software is required.
Multimedia skills, in particular strong video production and editing ability using Adobe Premier is required.
Understanding of other external related functions in athletics including marketing, development, and licensing are desirable.
Sound knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations as they pertain to athletic communications along with NCAA approved statistical procedures for basketball and volleyball is required.
Experience with interview techniques and the ability to define and deliver media messages is necessary.
Demonstrated ability to maintain professional relationships with external media outlets is necessary.
