The Associate Director of Athletic Communications is a member of UNH Athletics' communications team, which is a component of the External Relations department. One of the primary responsibilities of this role is to serve as a front-line ambassador for the nationally renowned UNH men's hockey program, as well as other sports as assigned by the Associate Athletic Director for Communications. This person will also be a key point person between coaches and the external relations team. Travel with men's hockey is mandatory and travel with other sports may be required.
In addition to working with coaches, the role requires an understanding of the external relations team's strategies around fan engagement, building attendance, generating revenue, and communicating the student-athlete experience. Accordingly, the role requires this person to draw in the resources of the external relations department (digital media, UNH Wildcat Productions, media relations, marketing, etc.) in order to implement organizational objectives. A proficiency with social media marketing including, but not limited to, knowledge of leading media platforms, the need to be current, and how-to skills for community building is a critical skill. Short-form writing skills, media relations, sport-specific statistical documentation, and in-game statistical oversight are also important competencies.
This individual communicates regularly with campus personnel, donors and the athletics development office, as well as alumni to strengthen the program's relationship with each stakeholder group. The position requires a collaborative relationship with the Associate Athletic Director for Marketing and Promotions and athletic team staff for whom he or she serves.
Duties/Responsibilities:
• Relay key messaging to external stakeholders
• Identify and pitch content directly or through the external relations department for social media, print, and broadcast media
• Communicate the student-athletes' experience, which requires knowledge of their biographies and personal stories
• Collaborate with the marketing team on special projects to inspire attendance to athletic events
• Contribute ideas to the social media team for special features
• Engage fans through social media channels as inside source for designated teams
• Work closely with coaches, student-athletes and athletic department personnel to stay current on stories and subjects they wish to promote and publicize
• Supervise student and full-time interns. Complete semester evaluations for student interns and provide Director of Athletic Communications with feedback on full-time interns. Assist in the development of office staff wherever possible.
• Coordinate interview requests from media for ESPN3 broadcasts, television reports, newspapers and other outlets
• Promote ticket sales
• Compile game notes, pertinent information and historical data for use by working media
• Work with athletics development office on stories related to designated teams' special events and alumni/athlete networking and capital projects to come
• Represent the University on a high professional level, with dignity, integrity, and strength of character. Respect the rights and dignity of each student-athlete, display sensitivity to diversity issues and work to create an inclusive and welcoming environment.
• Maintain competency with respect to knowledge of, compliance with, state and federal laws, University policies/ regulations, America East Conference rules/policies, and NCAA rules. Report to the Director of Athletics any violation of NCAA, conference, and or institutional rules.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree.
Acceptable minimum years of experience: 3 years.
Other minimum qualifications: A minimum of three years experience working in a sports information/athletic communications office or equivalent. Must have strong writing skills and familiarity with AP style, strong oral communication skills and the ability to multi-task and handle multiple projects independently. Ability to work evenings and weekends is required, as well as the ability to travel.
Additional Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree. Should be familiar with Stat Crew software for hockey in addition to other sports. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign and Photoshop), HTML, IMovie and QuickTime Pro; knowledge in advanced video editing and Flash is a plus.
