Seattle University is a highly selective, independent, Catholic, Jesuit institution adjacent to downtown Seattle, and is seeking a dynamic and proven athletics department professional to serve as its Assistant Director for Compliance and Student Services.
Located on Capitol Hill, one of Seattle's most vibrant neighborhoods, Seattle University is one of 28 Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States and currently enrolls more than 7,400 graduate and undergraduate students within nine schools and colleges. Seattle University is among the most diverse independent universities in the West: 40 percent of its students are from ethnically diverse backgrounds and students come from 77 nations and all 50 states. Seattle University employs approximately 1,500 faculty and staff and has an annual operating budget of over $210M.
The university's athletic program fields 20 Division I intercollegiate teams (9 men's and 11 women's) and is comprised of more than 350 student athletes. The Redhawks, Seattle University's athletic teams, compete in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) in all sports and have an excellent track record of achievement both on the field and court and in the classroom. In the five years with the WAC, the Redhawk teams have a combined 31 WAC conference titles, including both team and individual championships.
GENERAL PURPOSE
The Assistant Director-Compliance and Student Services will primarily assist with developing and implementing the rules education program, provide rules interpretations to coaches and staff, assist with the department's monitoring efforts, and support the Seattle University Athletics Academic and Compliance student services unit.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
General guidance and direction of the Associate AD-Student-Athlete Services.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Recruiting (25%): Independently educate and provide interpretations to coaches and other staff members on rules and policies regarding prospect recruiting. Authorize prospect official visits and monitor all recruiting activity, both on and off-campus. Manage the permission to contact program and transfer release process. Assist in the management of complimentary ticket program. This position will provide education and counsel to prospective and current student-athletes and their parents regarding recruiting rules and policies. Serve as the main point of contact to the recruiting software entity for the department.
Playing and Practice Seasons (20%): Approve playing and practice season declarations. Monitor countable athletically related activities, outside competitions, summer league participation, and team travel. Approve and monitor sport personnel/coaching staff limitations..
Rules Education/Interpretations (20%): Independently create educational materials and organize in- person educational sessions for student-athletes, coaches, and key campus constituents. Create a timeline for educational efforts and timely materials. Work closely with other athletic department areas such as coaches, athletic training room, ticket office, business office, travel office, marketing office, representatives of athletic interest, and outside entities, with regards to compliance in the areas listed above. Work with campus entities including the financial aid office and Housing and Residence Life.
Academic Success & Eligibility (15%) Responsibilities include providing academic support and advising for select teams as assigned, provide academic advising for graduation plans, ensure declaration of major and advise of impact of change of major, track progress toward degree, and connect student-athletes with academic resources.
Camps/Clinics (10%): Approve all institutional and non-institutional camps and clinics. Work directly with coaches, facilities, and business office within athletics to ensure camps and clinics adhere to all NCAA rules; provide eligibility educational sessions to prospects; provide prior approval on all advertisements, and hiring practices. Responsible to approve and monitor prospect and student-athlete employment.
Amateurism, Awards and Benefits (10%): Work directly with coaches and other athletic staff members to ensure all awards and benefits that are provided to student-athletes meet all institutional, conference and NCAA rules including, but not limited to, occasional meals, banquets, letter awards and participation awards. This position requires highly specialized knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations and how to integrate with institutional guidelines. Must be able to identify and resolve problems and issues in a timely manner using independent judgment and decision-making abilities.
REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years of related working experience. Applicant must have a working knowledge of NCAA regulations, NCAA Legislative Services Database, the NCAA Eligibility Center, CA and recruiting software programs. Familiarity with NAAC best practice standards and willingness to travel to professional conferences. Must have strong organizational, interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to assume a variety of independent responsibilities. Individual must be able to work under pressure in a busy and diverse environment handling confidential and sensitive information in a professional manner. Demonstrated ability to pay attention to detail, prioritize, and complete multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Applicant must have a working knowledge of Word, Excel, and database applications.
