New York Institute of Technology, located on two campuses in New York, seeks a dynamic leader to be our next Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation. Reporting directly to the President and CEO, the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Recreation will provide strategic leadership, direction, and management of all programs, staff, and facilities of the athletics department.
The Director’s goal is to create and enhance a culture of passion, pride, and performance to create the conditions in which each student athlete has an outstanding educational and athletic experience.
While responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, and assessment of coaches who are student-centered and mission-appropriate, the Director will also be an effective team player and work closely with fellow administrators to optimize opportunities to recruit students, organize fund raising events, and market the athletic program to current, former, and prospective constituents.
Suitable candidates must possess a deep understanding of the important issues and trends acting on intercollegiate and recreational athletics and will have a strong, demonstrable record of success and accomplishment in a large intercollegiate organization. A proven track record of successful fund-raising activities plus deep knowledge and skills in staff management, facilities management, compliance administration, finance, budgeting, marketing, and public relations are essential qualities of a strong candidate.
The Director represents the athletic department, as well as the institution, to the campus and the community and must demonstrate personal integrity, high energy, and an authentic and transparent leadership style. Superb communication skills are required, as is a deep commitment to gender equity and diversity.
The successful candidate will have:
• Bachelor’s degree in sports management or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
• Minimum of seven years of progressive experience in athletics at the university level. Coaching experience at the inter-collegiate level will be a plus.
• Experience in budget planning and all aspects of financial and personnel management necessary for the operation of intercollegiate athletics and college recreation programs.
• Experience in and understanding of fundraising, community involvement, and public relations.
• Demonstrated effectiveness in leading and developing students and coaches.
• Working knowledge of all federal, divisional, and college athletics regulations including NCAA recruitment and financial aid policies, FERPA, Title IX compliance, Clery Act, etc.
• Experience with Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, Excel, Access, etc.)
