The University of South Carolina Upstate, a comprehensive public institution, invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of Athletics. This is an exceptional leadership opportunity for an experienced athletics administrator to plan and direct a growing and competitively successful NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics program.
The Director of Athletics provides leadership and direction to the intercollegiate athletics program consistent with the academic mission of the University. The Director is responsible for the overall management of the University’s Division I Athletics Department. The Director supervises an NCAA Division I program assuring that all programs comply fully with institutional, Atlantic Sun Conference, and NCAA guidelines.
The Director of Athletics works closely with the Chancellor to support the mission of the University. This senior administrator reports directly to the Chancellor and serves on the Chancellor’s Cabinet. The Director works with academic and administrative leaders to set the strategic direction for the intercollegiate athletics program.
The Director of Athletics leads a team of approximately 50 coaches and support staff and manages a budget of over $7M. The Department sponsors teams in 17 NCAA Division I sports, 9 for men and 8 for women. The USC Upstate Spartans are a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference.
With the arrival of Dr. Brendan Kelly as Chancellor on March 1, the Director of Athletics will play a leadership role in building momentum for the new Chancellor’s vision for the University. In the capacity of Director of Athletics, this administrator will work closely with the Chancellor, Vice Chancellors, faculty, students, alumni and many of the top business and community leaders in the area.

Primary Responsibilities
• Responsible for the hiring, supervision, mentorship and evaluation of coaches and staff.
• Monitor and ensure NCAA and Title IX compliance.
• Assume responsibility for adherence to rules and regulations governing University, Atlantic Sun Conference, and the NCAA, including assisting in the education process extended to the alumni and the community.
• Demonstrate significant experience in strategic and financial planning, as well as organizational development and personnel management.
• Support the professional development of the administrative and coaching staffs, promote their accomplishments, and establish positive morale and relationships.
• Oversee and monitor closely all phases of budget management for the Department of Athletics.
• Participate actively in Atlantic Sun Conference and NCAA meetings and activities.
• Collaborate with the USC Vice Chancellor and Executive Director of the USC Upstate Foundation on fundraising initiatives to support all sports in the University’s NCAA Division I program.
• Act as the chief fundraiser for the Department of Athletics. Serve as chief public relations officer and oversees all Athletics external operations.
• Participate actively on university committees and in campus discussion on a variety of student and institutional issues.
• Provide leadership in the planning and management of all athletic facilities.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships and communications with faculty, administrators, staff, student body, student government association, alumni, friends, booster clubs, and the local community regarding athletics at the USC Upstate.
• Be a positive presence in the community among individuals and corporations via participation in both internal and external events.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred;
• Leads with the highest ethical and moral standards;
• 3 to 5 years of progressive administrative experience, preferably in athletics administration, in higher education and at the NCAA Division I level;
• Must demonstrate the ability to lead and manage a complex organization that serves multiple stakeholders. The position requires knowledge of coaching, NCAA rules and regulations, Title IX compliance, supervision and human resources management, fiscal management, strategic planning, fundraising, and public relations;
• Experience in a diverse and complex university culture where athletics plays a visible and supportive role in the life of the campus;
• Demonstrates a commitment to leading a competitive intercollegiate Division I sports program in the context of an academically challenging collegiate environment;
• Proven ability to work effectively with diverse groups;
• Awareness of the changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics and ability to navigate successfully in that environment.
