Grand Canyon University is currently seeking a Director of Sports Performance. The primary job duty of the Director is to provide leadership and management of the programming, services and operations of the Sports Performance (or Strength and Conditioning) department that support 21 NCAA intercollegiate sports. The role will establish a unifying set of core training principles, standards for teaching and coaching as well as a code of conduct applies to each full time coach or intern working in strength and conditioning.
Responsibilities:
Oversee the development, and design of strength and conditioning programs unique for each GCU sport.
Assist and train strength and conditioning coaches to improve workouts and learn individual speed, endurance, strength and conditioning techniques
Establish injury preventative programming in conjunction with Sports Medicine to reduce sports- With designated sports: design and implement speed, endurance, strength training, flexibility and conditioning programs.
Teach strength and power development exercises to student athletes. Work with teams, individuals, and coaching staffs to develop plans and programs for individual sport requirements. Evaluate athletes and perform tests; oversee maintenance of records; monitor progress, attendance, goals and other information for athletes.
Attend practices and home and away events for assigned sports.
Supervise staff to ensure that sport specific training activities are properly executed
Budgetary control of expenditures relating to the strength department
Facilitates a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required by the Vice President of Athletics.
Monitor appearance, maintenance, and organization of equipment in training facilities.
Provide continuing education opportunities for Sports Performance staff.
Responsible for maintaining software applications which are utilized to record student athlete conditioning programming.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree from accredited 4-year university, preferably in sports or health sciences discipline, e.g. Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Movement Science or other related field.
Minimum 4 years’ relevant experience in strength and conditioning coaching.
Possess a certification with the National Strength and Conditional Association (CSCS) or Collegiate Strength & Conditioning Coaches Association (SCCC).
Knowledgeable of University, NCAA and Conference rules and regulations.
Proficiency with MS Office Suite software and familiarity with team, game, meet management software preferred.
Valid driver’s license and clean driving record; position occasionally operates University vehicles.
Provide a positive example to students by supporting the University’s Doctrinal Statement, Ethical Position Statement and Mission of Grand Canyon University.
Preferred Qualifications:
Master’s degree, preferably in sports or health sciences discipline, e.g. Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Movement Science or other related field.
Prior experience leading a NCAA Division 1 strength and conditioning department, preferred.
CPR, First Aid and AED required; Coaches’ Safety Training certifications preferred. Will need to obtain certifications within one year of employment if not currently certified.
