Amherst College invites applications for the position of Assistant to the Director of Athletics and Athletic Trainer Intern, a two year, ten-months per year internship in the college's Department of Physical Education and Athletics. The internship is funded by the NCAA Ethnic Minority and Women's Grant. This grant is designed to provide financial assistance to the division's member schools and conferences that are committed to enhancing ethic minority and gender representation in entry-level, intercollegiate athletics administrative positions.

The Assistant to the Athletic Director and Athletic Trainer Intern will be systematically exposed to a range of key Athletic Department administrative duties, while given the opportunity to gain hands-on experience as an Athletic Trainer. The intern will be mentored and guided by seasoned administrators, and given access to a new Staff Leadership Development Program run by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
In the first year, assignments will be designed to expose the intern to a range of skills and responsibilities including athletic department operations, game management, tournament direction, community building, diversity and athletic training clinical practice. During the second year, the intern will collaborate with mentors to develop goals and a work plan based on individual interests. The plan may include a variety of activities, but at least 70% of the work will focus on athletic administration and 30% on athletic training services. In addition, the Intern takes appropriate actions to support a diverse workforce and participates in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.
Work Schedule:
Our work is central to the students involved in athletics activities and their needs occur at a variety of times throughout the day, week, and year and in such, a flexible schedule is required. The work schedule varies and corresponds to the athletic activities and involves traveling with teams to events and NCAA tournament championships. Attendance at specified intercollegiate practices and events is required.
Key Responsibilities
Athletic Department Operations
Assist the Director of Sports Medicine on day-to-day operations of the Athletics and Sports Medicine Departments including budgeting, payroll, inventory, scheduling, fundraising, and staff evaluations.
Athletic Training Clinical Practice
Learn and gain practical experience with evaluations, care, and rehabilitation of athletic related injuries, game and practice coverage, and concussion care. Create and maintain medical records for all students treated in the sports medicine facilities. Comply with the NATA Board of Certifications “Standards of Professional Practice” and maintain national certification and State licensure by complying with professional continuing education requirements as set forth by the National Athletic Trainers Association
Community Building and Diversity Work in Athletics
Contribute to community building and diversity efforts within Amherst Athletics by serving on the Athletic Departments Diversity and Inclusion Council. Work to increase communication and community-building efforts to foster a more inclusive and welcoming environment for all student-athletes. Specific projects may include working with the Athletics-led Amherst Leadership program (Amherst LEADS), becoming familiar with NESCAC and NCAA policies and procedures and helping to compose a NESCAC or NCAA grant proposal, and working with varsity teams alongside the Assistant Athletic Director, on a variety of campus and local community outreach projects supporting diversity and inclusion including Special Olympics, Amherst Athletes Read, Supper Song and Story (an annual celebration of Martin Luther King Day), and our Holyoke Youth Sports Initiative.
NESCAC and NCAA Tournament Hosting
Work directly with Tournament Managers, hosting conference and NCAA championship events, gaining valuable tournament experience in a variety of sports and venues. The first year will be devoted to learning the process alongside tournament directors; in the second year, the intern will serve as a Tournament Director with the current Tournament Director acting as the Assistant.
Home Game Management
Serve on the Athletic Department Operations Committee and work directly with the Athletic Director, Associate Athletic Director for Finance and Facilities, Business Manager, and Equipment Manager to organize all facets of home game management.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required
• Bachelor's Degree
• Current NATA certification
• Eligibility for MA State Licensure
• Strong verbal and written communication, interpersonal, organizational, and time-management skills
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative, work independently and collaboratively
Preferred
• Experience with athletic department operations
• Experience with collision sports medical coverage
• Demonstrated skill with technologies used in athletics/education
