Director of Athletic Media Relations

Primary Purpose
Under the direction of the Associate Director of Athletics for Marketing & Media, this position is responsible for facilitating the media relations component of the NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics program and interacting with a wide variety of media sources.
Essential Functions
1) Promotes and manages positive relations and communications with local and regional media – newspapers, radio, television and other media outlets.
2) Serves as the primary contact to develop positive relations with all media outlets.
3) Manages University Athletic website:
• Trains and manages media relations team to contribute to website content.
• Develops and manages website content including production of videos.
• Negotiates website contracts.
4) Requests bids, evaluates and negotiates contracts for television and radio.
5) Provides guidance, assistance or direction to visiting media during broadcast coverage.
6) Supervises unit staff to include hiring, training, performance evaluation and corrective actions.
7) Manages and oversees unit budget. Provides input toward annual budget planning.
8) Participates in event management and serves as Game Administrator as assigned.
9) Manages Pacific Athletics Hall of Fame, serves as chairperson and oversees evening activities and communications.
10) Collaborates with University’s media relations on routine and specific communications.
11) Provides support to assigned sport programs and liaises with other departments to help resolve problems, issues or concerns related to assigned sports.
12) Supervises technology and performs numerous technical support functions for athletic department.
13) Performs other duties as assigned or requested.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in media relations, communications, journalism, or a related field.
Three years’ experience in media relations, communications or related field.
Preferred Qualifications
• Master’s degree.
• Five (5) or more years’ experience in media relations, communications or related field.
• Experience in a sports or athletic environment.
• Positive attitude, proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.
• Solid understanding of various media forms and communications used within industry.
• Knowledge of NCAA and conference rules and regulations.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with ability to get message across by adopting a range of styles, tools and techniques appropriate to the audience and nature of information. Ability to deal with a wide range of people with tact and diplomacy.
• Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing, both internally and externally
• Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
• Ability to proactively identify communications opportunities and develop
supporting programs.
• Working knowledge of publishing software, MS Office, video editing software, various content management software system software.
• Working knowledge of various social media outlets.
Physical Requirements

Requires extended periods of sitting and repetitive hand/wrist motion while using computer keyboard and phone. Occasional standing, walking, walking across campus, climbing stairs, bending, stooping and reaching. Constant verbal and written communication. Occasional lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds.
Work Environment/Work Week/Travel
Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment with use of computer and phone. Work also performed in sports facilities. Must be prepared to work non-business hours and weekends.
Travel is required for some road contests of assigned teams.
Valid driver’s license required. Incumbent must also be able to meet the University’s fleet rules and be eligible to drive for University business. The University and its insurance carrier reserves the right to exclude applicants based on their driving record.
