Athletics Mission Statement: The mission of the University of Hartford Athletics Department is to enhance the educational and personal development of all students by providing equitable intercollegiate, intramural, and recreational athletics opportunities in an environment that promotes excellence and wellness. We value academic achievement as the primary measure of a successful student-athlete and integrity as the hallmark of a successful program.
Director of Athletics: The Director of Athletics provides leadership and direction to programs and services in athletic and recreational sports that support a campus-wide program consistent with the academic mission of the University. The Director is responsible for the overall management of the University’s Division I Athletics Department. The Director supervises an NCAA Division I program consisting of 17 sports, assuring that all programs comply fully with institutional, America East Conference, and NCAA guidelines.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Act as the chief fundraiser for the Department of Athletics. Serve as chief public relations officer and oversees all Athletics external operations.
• Responsible for the hiring, supervision, mentorship and evaluation of coaches and staff.
• Demonstrate significant experience in strategic and financial planning, as well as organizational development and personnel management.
• Support the professional development of the administrative and coaching staffs, promote their accomplishments, and establish positive morale and relationships.
• Monitor NCAA and Title IX compliance.
• Oversee and monitor closely all phases of budget management for the Department of Athletics.
• Provide visionary leadership and role modeling for sustaining a culture of transparency, professionalism, integrity, and respect at all levels.
• Interact with students and parents to resolve highly sensitive and difficult issues.
• Participate actively in America East and NCAA meetings and activates.
• Act as the University’s liaison to other institution’s Athletic Directors, Senior Associate Athletic Directors, Senior Women’s Administrators, and Sports Centers.
• Participate actively on university committees and in campus discussion on a variety of student and institutional issues.
• Assume responsibility for adherence to rules and regulations governing University, America East, and the NCAA, including assisting in the education process extended to the alumni and the community.
• Provides leadership in the planning and management of all athletic and recreational facilities.
• Recognizes that students must find a balance between academic success, recreational and fitness goals, and athletic endeavors and works with staff both internal and external to the department to support this commitment.
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships and communications with faculty, administrators, staff, student body, student government association, alumni, friends, booster clubs, and the local community regarding athletics at the University of Hartford.
• Be a positive presence in the community among individuals and corporations via participation in both internal and external events.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred;
• Leads with the highest ethical and moral standards;
• Minimum of 5 years of progressive athletic administrative experience;
• Must demonstrate the ability to lead and manage a complex organization that serves multiple stakeholders. The position requires knowledge of coaching, student programs and recreation, fundraising, supervision and human resources management, fiscal management, strategic planning, and public relations;
• Experience in a diverse and complex university culture where athletics plays a visible and supportive role in the life of the campus;
• Demonstrates a commitment to leading a competitive intercollegiate Division 1 sports program in the context of an academically rigorous collegiate environment;
• Ability to work effectively with diverse groups;
• Awareness of the changing landscape of intercollegiate athletics and ability to navigate successfully in that environment.
