Accountable to the strategic leadership of the sports nutrition service to ensure world leading nutrition support. Actively promote the role of food to enhance performance. Ensure service meets governance standards across the organization. Develop and provide comprehensive evidence based nutrition education and services specific to the goals of individual student athletes. Adopt a problem-solving approach to optimizing performance while promoting the philosophy and objectives of the Intercollegiate Athletics Department, including adherence to all department policies and procedures, as well as the rules and regulations of the University of Oregon, Pac-12 Conference and the NCAA.
Delivery of nutrition needs for assigned teams
• Oversee the nutritional needs for assigned sports including nutritional plans with fixed assessment and review points based on evidence and athlete goals
• Provide nutritional counseling and educational services to student athletes
• Develop effective sport-specific nutrition educational presentations and handout materials
• Creation and maintenance of team nutrition protocols
• Creation of home and travel nutrition menus and protocols
• Live meal coaching and education
• Administration and life skills education
• Responsibility for nutritional practices adhering to team rules, departmental and university policies, as well as Pac-12 and NCAA regulations.
Management and oversight of department
• Hire, train, supervise, discipline and conduct annual evaluations for two full-time officers of administration, interns and student managers.
• Manage departmental budget, administrative responsibilities and junior staff members.
• Ultimate responsibility for product and inventory
• Manage colleagues, student workers and interns
• Collaborate with campus and foster relationships to promote and develop interns
Conduct nutritional assessments and data collection
• Lead with conducting nutritional assessments including Hydration, Body Composition and Weight Management
• Create protocols and develop documentation and reporting tools with accountability for assessments
• Utilize and act on integrated interdisciplinary data
Contribution to multidisciplinary support
• Act as lead Sport Science Contact where appropriate coordinating support services
• Ensure effective and constant communication and collaboration with coaches, staff, and other practitioners
Other duties as assigned by supervisor
Knowledge of and commitment to the Oregon State Board of Higher Education’s Internal Management Directive Section 8 and University rules and regulations, as well as dedication to the full academic and social development of student-athletes are essential
Required Qualification
• Master’s degree in dietetics/nutrition or related field
• Three years post-graduate experience in providing performance nutrition support to collegiate, professional or elite level athletes
• One year experience within a multi-disciplinary unit which may have involved managing staff and wider resources
• Experience of implementing weight loss, maintenance and gain strategies in support of performance outcomes
• Incumbent must obtain CSSD, RD or alternate certification to practice within the state of Oregon within three months of start date.
• This position will require a valid driver’s license and the ability to obtain UO Drivers Certification.
Professional Competencies
• Strong written and oral communication skills
• Ability to translate science into practical food advice
• Preferred Qualifications
• A PhD (or equivalent) in dietetics/nutrition or related field
• Evidence of research specializing in the area of physical preparation and performance of elite athletes
• Internationally recognised post graduate qualification in sports nutrition e.g. IOC Diploma in Sports Nutrition
• ISAK Level 1 Accreditation
• LXMO certification appropriate to Oregon
• Record of ongoing antidoping education
• Experience and understanding of the applied disciplines of sport science
• Data management experience
• Experience with a diverse range of populations
