Regis, A Catholic University in Greater Boston, seeks applicants to the position of Director of Athletics.
The Director of Athletics (AD) is a visionary leader who directs and supervises the administration of all varsity athletic programs and all administrative, operational, and business functions of the Athletics Department in accordance with the mission, policies, and procedures established by Regis College, the New England Collegiate Conference, the Great Northeast Athletic Conference, the NCAA, and federal and state law. The AD actively promotes the College, is accountable for the quality of the student-athlete experience, and will establish and develop collegial relationships with internal and external constituents. The AD is responsible for strategic planning for the department including sports sponsorship, facilities renovation and expansion. The AD will lead a successful intercollegiate athletics program that is gender-equitable, comprehensive and competitive. The AD will engage in major fundraising and alumni involvement initiatives, and lead athletic facility renovations and new development efforts.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
• Provide leadership and serve as the primary spokesperson for the intercollegiate athletics program; direct with strategic vision and guide the department’s staff; oversee 18 intercollegiate athletics programs.
• Manage, empower and evaluate a leadership team comprised of one associate director and two assistant directors, in addition to 12 full-time administrators and coaches, 2 part-time coaches, and 15 graduate interns through active and inclusive communication and delegation; ensure staff accountability for excellence through clearly defined, established and measurable performance metrics; establish goals for administrative staff and varsity athletic programs that will ensure student athletic and academic success. Responsible for managing all staffing issues, including hiring and compliance with all Human Resources and College policies and procedures.
• Formulate and administer policies, rules and regulations and manage risk for the intercollegiate athletic program and related programs consistent with the goals of Regis College.
• Serve as the College’s key internal and external spokesperson for intercollegiate athletics and recreation, and provide periodic reports and updates to the College administration and other constituent groups. Communicate the philosophy, objectives, and strategies of the Athletic Department to internal and external constituent groups.
• Engage in major fundraising and alumni involvement initiatives, and lead athletic facility renovations and new development efforts.
• Work closely with the faculty athletics representative and all faculty to facilitate positive relationships for the department and student-athletes. Ensure that student athletes make satisfactory academic progress, and achieve retention and graduation rates commensurate with or higher than the overall undergraduate student body.
• Establish and maintain relationships and programs with College offices outside of Athletics including but not limited to admission, financial aid, student life, student services, graduate affairs, campus ministry, information technology, academic leadership, development and alumni relations, etc. in order to maintain a current understanding of collaborative opportunities on campus.
• Develop and implement student-athlete outreach programs through implementation and oversight of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), annual recognition awards, as well as a comprehensive end-of-season evaluation program.
• Serve as the department’s Compliance Officer for the NCAA, NECC, GNAC, ECAC, and the Regis College internal judicial process.
• Develop annual budget proposals and administer approved budgets. Supervise individual team fundraising budgets.
• Manage an effective athletic recruitment program for all intercollegiate athletic programs ensuring compliance with NCAA recruitment regulations.
• Serve as the College representative, at the President’s request, to the NCAA, NECC, GNAC, ECAC, and other appropriate outside athletic organizations.
• Ensure the ongoing safe operation and compliance of the athletic facility, pool and outdoor athletic facilities with local, state and national governing body rules and regulations.
• Make recommendations on the scope and nature of the outside membership program and rental agreements for use of the College’s athletic facilities.
• Maintain statistics and prepare reports on the athletic program, facility usage and revenue generation.
• Work with the College’s leadership team and perform other duties as assigned by the Vice President of Undergraduate Student Affairs and Enrollment and the President of the College.
SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/TRAINING REQUIRED:
• Master’s degree and minimum of ten years of experience in athletic administration leadership is required.
• Strong organizational skills; excels in prioritizing multiple tasks with attention to detail, problem solving and follow-through to consistently meet expectations and deadlines.
• Proven experience working with and meeting the needs of a diverse student body.
• Ability to build coalitions and develop and maintain strong professional relationships.
• Strong management skills; demonstrated experience in the supervision, development, and mentoring of staff, and student athletes.
• Proven ability to think strategically and align department goals with the University’s strategic plan.
• Outstanding interpersonal skills, and written and oral communication skills.
• Proven leadership, planning, financial and budget management; prior experience managing athletic facilities.
• Proficient skills with Microsoft applications, including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and active knowledge digital and social media resources.
• The ability to work a flexible and irregular schedule.
• Works well as a team member or independently.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
• Select, supervise and evaluate coaches, interns and administrative staff for the athletic program; make hiring recommendations in accordance with College policy, federal and state law.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
• This position requires the ability to lift in excess of 40 lbs.
• Requires working nights and weekends.
